For beauty fans, Ulta and Sephora have been go-to destinations for years, each with its own unique appeal. Ulta, established in 1990, offers an extensive selection of products for all budgets. Meanwhile, Sephora, in business since 1969, is known for its upscale brands and innovative store experience. Both stores make exploring makeup and skincare fun and inspiring. Comparing the two shows how different approaches can create equally exciting ways to enjoy cosmetics.
Some people may prefer Ulta over Sephora because it offers a wide range of products at varying price points, making it easy to shop for both drugstore and high-end brands in one place. Shoppers can find skincare, makeup, haircare, and fragrance options all under one roof, creating a convenient one-stop shopping experience. “I feel like Ulta is definitely a preferred store because I’ve always had great experiences with them.” Jaida Morton, senior at OHS, says. Ulta also carries many well-known and emerging brands, appealing to a broad audience with diverse preferences. Its stores and online platform are designed for accessibility and ease of use, making it simple for customers to discover new products, experiment with trends, and enjoy a seamless beauty shopping experience overall. “I prefer Ulta because the prices are lower and you can get a decent amount of product for your money,” said Avana Diaz, a freshman at OHS.
On the other hand, some shoppers favor Sephora for its more curated selection of luxury brands and exclusive products that may be harder to find elsewhere. Sephora’s knowledgeable staff and in-store experiences, like beauty classes and makeovers, can make shopping feel more personalized. “I prefer the more curated selection of Sephora,” freshman Emeli Cruz said. Convenience may also play a role, as Ulta stores are often larger and include a salon, while Sephora focuses solely on cosmetics and skincare. “Ulta is more diverse with their options,” senior Yasmin Chavez says. Ultimately, the choice often comes down to a combination of price, product variety, shopping experience, and brand loyalty. Personal preference and specific beauty needs heavily influence which store someone might favor. Yasmin adds, “I prefer high-end makeup, so I go to Sephora for that. But if I need something quick, I go to Ulta.”
Ulta and Sephora both offer popular online shopping experiences and loyalty programs, but they appeal to shoppers in different ways. Ulta’s “Ultamate Rewards” allows members to earn points for every dollar spent, which can be redeemed for money off future purchases. The program is flexible, includes drugstore and prestige brands, and often features frequent sales, coupons, and bonus point events. This makes Ulta attractive to budget-conscious shoppers who enjoy maximizing savings. Jaida also says, “Really good makeup is expensive, so I love when they text or email a deal.” Sephora’s “Beauty Insider” program focuses more on experiences than discounts. Members earn points for rewards, receive birthday gifts, free shipping, early access to product launches, and invitations to exclusive events. Sephora is known for its curated selection of high-end and exclusive brands, appealing to shoppers who value luxury, trends, and brand prestige. Emeli Cruz also adds, “I believe Sephora’s Insider program is better.” People may prefer Ulta for affordability and rewards that feel like cash back, while Sephora attracts those seeking premium products, exclusivity, and a more upscale shopping experience.
Some shoppers do not have a strong preference for either Ulta or Sephora and choose where to shop based on the products they are looking for. Ulta is often preferred by those who want a mix of drugstore and high-end brands in one place. Its stores carry a wide variety of makeup, skincare, haircare, and fragrance items, making it convenient for shoppers who need everyday essentials as well as luxury products. The staff at Ulta can help customers find what they need, recommend products, and provide tips for different beauty routines. “Ulta matches my skin so much better. But the staff at both stores are equal to each other; I believe it depends on the location you go to,” Yasmin Chavez says.
In the end, both Ulta and Sephora both have something unique to offer, and many shoppers appreciate the strengths of each store. Ulta is great for combining everyday essentials with high-end products, while Sephora is perfect for those seeking prestige brands or the latest beauty trends. The helpful staff at both stores make it easier for customers to explore, experiment, and find the products that suit them best, making the beauty shopping experience more personalized and enjoyable.

I’m not much of a make-up person and I’ve only been to Ulta and Sephora once. The Sephora was so crowded and the smell of perfume was very strong. The Ulta was less crowded, but I think both shops are pretty good with their product.

I prefer Sephora, but I don’t really have a strong opinion. I feel Sephora is organized in a way that makes sense, but they don’t really have a wide selection. Ulta has has a large assortment of different beauty products and I can always find what I’m looking for. Since Ulta can be found in certain Target stores, sometimes it’s more convenient for me to shop there.

I definitely agree with what Avana said about Ulta being better for your money since I’m on a budget, being able to get drugstore stuff and high end makeup in one trip is a lifesaver.
