Have you always wanted to share your writing at Osbourn, in the real world, or both? You’re in luck! Mrs. Sorfi made it possible for the Creative Writing Club to arise here at Osbourn! We do various activities such as writing, group projects, and more! I have spoken to Mrs. Sorfi to give you more understanding of this club.
Since school keeps you busy from being the young writer you are, this new club provides a dedicated time and space for your creativity. This club will give you the necessary time you require to finally write whatever your heart desires. Come on by and enjoy your creative side, and you might even affect change in the world because of your writings. “Students should join the Creative Writing Club because there are a lot of writers in this school that don’t have any time to actually write, so they are not using that talent and they aren’t enjoying it. This gives them dedicated time and space to that part of themselves. This club is way different from what they usually do in their classes and writing to me is the most powerful thing you can do to affect change in the world and to become as successful as possible. The better you can write, the more power you will have,” Mrs. Sorfi states.
As for Sofri’s plans, she hopes to host a poetry night for students to enjoy. We have a bunch of plans for this club such as allowing published authors to come on by, allowing members to join competitions, and more. Remember, these are plans and are not guaranteed to occur, but they might happen, so don’t miss out! “In addition to writing, I do have hopes to host a poetry night either here or across the street at Jirani’s, which we have done in the past. I would like to also have a slam poetry team that would travel and compete with other schools in the area. We can also allow authors to come on by and also to have other club members critique each other’s writing. This is a place to share ideas and to identify if the ideas are going to be good or not. I would like for our members to also join a contest and to give them resources to write scholarship applications. There is a lot of money to be won from writing competitions. That is one goal: to put people onto opportunities from writing scholarships and/or contests,” Sorfi added.
Need help to enhance your writing? Our club members will give you constructive feedback, so that your writing can be the best it can be. “Students can share writing or critiquing their writing, but as a group we would decide whether we want to do that and to what extent we want to do that, so people are encouraged and not discouraged. So basically giving feedback to enhance writing,” Sorfi says.
If you do end up joining the club, then you will most likely get in touch with your own creativity and explore that side of yourself! You can also be more aware about the opportunities your writing can bring to the table such as money won from competitions or scholarships! “The benefits of joining this club are trying to get in touch with your own creativity and explore it. The sharing of stories also helps us to connect with each other and in the school itself, which will also help us develop our writing skills. Another benefit is that you can be aware about writing contests and scholarships. It is also therapeutic to write and read our stories out loud,” Sorfi states.
Not sure if this club is for you? You are recommended if you like the written word, or want to learn more about it. If you are passionate about reading or you consider yourself as creative or if you want to join a writing contest, then you will enjoy being a part of this club! You don’t have to have any previous writings, so don’t be afraid to join. “I would recommend the club to students who like the written word, any kind of text or students who want to learn more about the written word. I would also recommend this club for people who like reading or people who consider themselves to be creative or people who want to join a writing contest. Another group I would like to mention are people who want to step outside of the box. You don’t have to have any previous writing to be inside of the club, but I’ll say they’ll need interest in trying different creative writing activities. Basically, creative people who are interested in writing,” Sorfi adds.
The only requirement is your interest in words or your interest in mixing words together to make your own creative writings! Again, you don’t have to have anything written or maybe you don’t plan on publishing anything, you are still welcome to join. “The only requirement for this club is that you are open to thinking outside of the box and that you like to think about words or play with words. You don’t have to have anything written and you don’t have to be the type of person who wants to publish your own writing. Maybe a book has impacted you, so you know how important words can be. You can come in and enjoy that environment where other people have the same interests as you,” Sorfi says.
Come on by room 1017 every other Thursday for the Creative Writing Club! Trust me, you will not regret being a part of this club.
Here are some dates when the club is meeting:
The 24th of April, the 8th of May, and the 22nd of May. Don’t miss out!
