On Tuesday, October 21st, 2025, famous author and illustrator Jeff Kinney came to Osbourn High School to promote his new book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Partypooper. It was an hour-long event from seven to eight pm. In this event, Kinney had a range of activities for groups of all ages, with fun prizes related to the series. From clothing, like shirts and hats, to everyday items such as pens and bags. During this event, hundreds of fans gathered with their Diary of a Wimpy Kid merchandise to show their love for the series.
Ms. Stacey Rubach, the guitar teacher at Osbourn High, hosted this event and has hosted other authors as well. “I had Tui T. Sutherland last May, Rick Riordan in September & Dave Pilkey is coming in December,” she explained. Rubach brings lots of famous authors here, but why? What is her motive?
“I do this to help promote the author’s latest book & to raise money for my guitar program. I have a former student who works for the Barnes & Noble store in Fairfax. This year, they need a place to host bigger authors. They partnered with me and the Osbourn High guitar program to help me fundraise for field trips, spirit wear, et cetera,” said Rubach.
So now that we know who hosts the events and why she does it, we need to know what the people think of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
Freshman Noah Laudat explained how he feels about the series, saying, “It is very interesting, the story keeps you coming back.”
Senior Alice Hertz added, “I really liked them, but I do not love the main character; but I truly relate to Rowley on a spiritual level.”
Laudat says he has been reading these books for years, “I started reading them when I was eight. I still read them from time to time.” Similarly, Hertz said, “I read the series in elementary school & it was really funny. I watched a bunch of the movies, and it was overall a great series.”
Students reminisce on the series with Sharon Hernandez saying, “I like Dog Days a lot,” and Jacey Reyes exclaiming, “Rodrick Rules is my favorite book!”
As the students get older, they could age out of the series; however, they still continue to spread the book’s legacy. “My brother loves to read those books,” says Reyes. “My brother really likes the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series, so he is very excited for the twentieth book.”
Jeff Kinney is an amazing author and illustrator. We are so grateful that Rubach had the opportunity to bring him here to Osbourn High.

I really enjoyed The Diary of A Wimpy Kid in elementary and read pretty much every single book. I wish I went to go see him.

I think it’s really cool that Jeff Kinney came to Osbourn! A lot of us grew up reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid, so it’s nice to see the series still bringing people together. I also think it’s great that the event helped support the guitar program. It’s fun to see the school do things that are both exciting and meaningful at the same time.
