As the cold leaves and spring blooms, summer is every day getting closer and closer. Many of us know what that means: summer break!
Many of us have very different plans. It could either be that we will be going on vacation, getting a job, or simply just chilling at home. But one thing is sure, almost all of us are ready and excited for summer break.
What will students at Osbourn High School do over the summer?
There are plenty of activities to do with all the free time that students will have, and most of them are really exciting.
“In the summer, I do a lot of activities. Such as swimming, fishing, going to Massanutten resort, and celebrating my birthday!” said Maliyah Stewart, a 9th grader at Osbourn High School.Â
Many students stay very productive and do a lot of activities with all their free time. Summer is definitely one of the best seasons ever, and it becomes even better if you have your birthday to celebrate. Happy early birthday to Maliyah, by the way, since we won’t be able to say it in person!
On the other hand, many students don’t have anything planned yet and like to just go with the flow. Some people like spontaneous moments that just happen naturally without anticipation. And sometimes, these plans work even better than the ones that were planned.
“This summer I do not have anything planned, but hopefully I will go to the beach at least 3 times, and one of them has to be with my amazing girlfriend because she’s the goat,” said Angel Orellana, a junior.Â
Some students have a significant other that they will spend time with during the summer, and this will make summer definitely better for them! But going out and going on trips requires something very important: money. And I think we all already know that money isn’t something that grows on trees, and we can get easily. Earning money comes from having a job or doing something in exchange for it.
“I am a very extroverted person, so I like to go out very frequently and meet new people, but I will probably not go out as much this summer because I will be unemployed and won’t have money,” said Angel.
A job is something that many people will have during summer, but many students won’t have one, therefore they don’t have a source of income. Regardless of how hard it is to get a job as a teenager, some students have managed to find a place where they do something they like.
“Yes, as a hostess at a Mexican restaurant in Leesburg, Virginia,” said Citlallli Gaspar, a 10th grader.
Sometimes finding a job near you is difficult, and many people have to even go out of town to find the right fit for them. A safe and healthy working environment is something crucial that we all have to look for when we apply somewhere, and sometimes, not every place offers that.
Going out of town cannot necessarily be for finding a job only; many people go out of town for vacations and sometimes even out of the country.
“I’m most likely staying in the US. I might go out of state to Georgia or North Carolina,” said Stewart.Â
Even if you don’t go out of the country, going out of state can also be pretty exciting!
Summer is a time to have fun and rest from the stress of school and homework. It is also a time to spend with all your loved ones and enjoy the moment.
And you, what will you be doing during summer break? Let me know in the comments!

I plan to go on a lot of hang outs and vacations because I love the beach. I work a few times the week in the summer, but it isn’t a problem for me really.

I’m part of a summer swim team and that’s a pretty large time commitment for me and my family. We’ll probably go to the beach for a week, but a majority of my time will be spent in the pool or being outside.

This summer, my main activities are going to Europe (a trip sponsored by the school) and potentially working at a job. I may also go to my grandparents’ house, but if I get a job, it’s probably off the table due to timing. Overall, I’m very excited for summer as it will give me a break from school, but I’m very sad that the class of 2026 won’t be here next year.

I like to go to the beach too, just like Angel. Sitting in the sand is the best! I hope everyone has a safe and happy break with their friends and family.
