Here at Osbourn High School, we have some of the hardest-working students, especially our sports teams. Our athletes are dedicated to what they do. We have various sports such as softball, baseball, girls lacrosse, boys lacrosse, girls soccer, boys soccer, girls and boys tennis, and lastly, spring track. Trying out can be not only stressful but also a difficult process. During tryouts, coaches look for not only talent but motivation as well. “When conducting tryouts for any sport (because I coach both cheer and girls lacrosse), I look at overall qualities, such as, if you are a good teammate by supporting others. How do you handle mistakes? Are you coachable? Do you accept feedback, or do you have a negative attitude and think you already know everything? My favorite thing about coaching is getting to see the growth in a student’s ability from when they first start the sport to the time they graduate from high school. It makes me happy to coach girls who have a passion for the sport and who enjoy bonding through a shared goal on a team!” said girls lacrosse and cheer head coach, Coach Edwards (Cough).
Our softball and baseball teams are examples of how our student-athletes are committed to their responsibilities. “I have been on the Osbourn High School baseball team for three years. Tryouts were pretty fun. I got to meet some new people and made important connections with future teammates. For the past few years, it has always been fun. There was a feel of competition for our positions, but it was a good feeling,” said junior Daniel Lopez. The most important thing about being in a sport is being committed to what you do. It doesn’t matter if you are at your lowest point in the game; it is always important to bounce back. “My favorite thing about the team is the fact that we are always trying to improve, no matter what. If we have a bad game, we can bounce back and prepare ourselves for the next,” junior Lopez said.
Just like student athletes, managers are also important as they help the coaches out with any extra work so that the coaches can focus on preparing the athletes for games. Managers help with hydrating the team after long practices or tiring games, and they help with announcements and keeping track of the game. Not only are managers there to help, but they also provide moral support as they cheer the team on to keep their spirits up! Sophomore Pricila Interiano says, “I like being manager for the girls lacrosse team because I get to meet new people and it’s fun to help around as well with learning new things. My favorite thing about managing is going to the games and doing the announcements. I get excited while cheering them on because I am truly proud of them.” Both girls and boys lacrosse teams are dedicated to what they have committed to doing. It is important as a student athlete that they are able to get along with one another and show each other that, as a team, they are able to show courage. “This is my second year playing lacrosse, and I enjoy it. One of my favorite things about being on the team is the brotherhood we all share and how we are basically just one big family and how we support each other no matter what,” said varsity player John Soliz.
Preparing for sports tryouts is one of the most crucial parts before joining a sport because you really want to make sure you are prepared both mentally and physically. From getting everything you need, practicing your technique, and getting a new physical, these are just some of the steps many student athletes here at Osbourn take. “I made sure to prepare myself for soccer tryouts by training and working on my skills while staying positive and having confidence to allow me to do my best during tryouts. The most challenging part about preparing for tryouts is feeling the need to give up, especially when you feel tired and feel like you can’t achieve a specific goal, but I always tell myself practice and confidence is key because anything is achievable if you work hard and try your best,” sophomore Keidy Chacon Diaz, who plays on the JV girls soccer team.
The feeling of being accepted into a sport is memorable. It’s a new chapter and a great life experience because it opens so many opportunities. The feeling personally is amazing, it makes you feel pumped and gives you confidence. “Being accepted into the boys soccer team felt awesome because I am confident I can put in work to make the team successful and win games. Also, giving me a chance to enjoy it with my teammates, who are also my friends, makes the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, it’s gonna be a great season, and my teammates and I are excited to show everyone our all and full potential,” sophomore Alexis Hernandez said.
Their hard work and dedication will lead them to a successful season. They have all really dedicated their time to this as it is their new passion. As the new season starts, everyone is pumped up and excited! This is their chance to meet new people and open their inner circle to be social that can help them in the future when given more opportunities in life. “I am really pushing myself to my full potential this season. I’m training hard for my games, working on my technique so I can be the best version of myself for me and my team to lead us to success and many wins. All of us together have created a strong connection with each other; we all have a really strong passion for this, and that too plays a big part because we need to have good communication for success. Overall, I’m ready to show everyone what we’ve got this season and give it our all!” said sophomore Camilla Reyes, who plays on the JV soccer team.
If you were to play a spring sport, which one would you choose?

If I had to choose a sport to do over spring, I would definitely choose soccer because it is my favorite sport ever.

It is so cool to see how hard the kids at OHS work. I liked learning that coaches don’t just care about being the best they want you to be a kind teammate who listens

This was a good article. I loved Coach Edwards tryout criteria. It sounds like a set up for a great team. If I had to play a spring sport, I would probably choose tennis. I play during the summer and it’s really fun.

If I were to play in a spring sport, I would play soccer because I love soccer. I have played soccer for many years before I had to stop. I think soccer is a great sport and I really like it.

I would probably choose girls tennis if I played a spring sport.
