Now that we are more than halfway into the school year, students have started choosing their classes for the next school year. Choosing what classes you want to have for next year may be difficult because you have to be aware of how it can benefit you for the diploma you want, how it can impact your schedule, and the difficulty of certain classes. When choosing classes for next year, you must choose a class for each main subject (Math, Science, History, English, and P.E.), and you also get to choose up to three electives. There are many electives you can choose from, which are sorted into 19 different categories (English electives, Social Studies electives, Science electives, OPHS electives, Health & P.E. electives, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Career & Tech ED, Architecture & Construction, Arts A/V Tech & Communications, Auto Technology, Business & Marketing, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Family & Consumer Science, Health Sciences, Information Technology, STEM engineering, and general electives).
With so many options to choose from, I wanted to see which electives caught the attention of students and why.
Bella Smith shares what three electives she chose and why, “For next year, the three electives I chose were Spanish 3 and Chorus 3 for an advanced diploma. I also chose Certified Nurse Aid because I want to get into the medical field.”
Alessandra Vilchez also tells us what electives she chose for next year, “Two of the electives I chose for next year were Leadership and Art 2. My friends have told me that leadership is a fun class, so I thought I’d try it out, and I took Art 1 this year and really enjoyed it, so I thought I’d take it again.”
I also interviewed Allyson Fernandez, and she tells us what electives she chose, “I chose Foundation of Arts 1, Intermediate Choir, and Honors French 3 because I like art and I’ve already done Chorus and French this year, so I wanna take it again for credits.”
Most Osbourn High School students have decided to choose the same elective they chose this year for next year. Now to find out which main courses students chose for their next year, I interviewed a couple of more students, like Kendal Metz, “I chose Honors English 1o, World History 2, Geometry, and Chemistry.”
After asking students which classes they have picked, I also asked them which classes they would recommend to other students. Katie Ho recommended Journalism, “I think that if you like to write, like English, or just want to share your thoughts with the public from time to time, then Journalism would be a pretty calm class to pick. I chose this class because I heard good things from a lot of people. I like this class because it isn’t stressful if you keep up with the assignments, and I also like to interview people and take photos.
I also asked Ngoc Le, “I recommend people to take Principles of Business and Marketing because if you want to major in something that’s in the business field, then choosing this class would be a good choice. You also get to be original and creative, and the work is easy.”
What classes have you chosen for next year? Let me know in the comments!

There are a lot of great courses to take here at OHS, as a graduating senior I wish I got to explore more!

I think picking classes is hard because you don’t really know what class you wanna take, you don’t know how the teachers teach their class and how they talk towards their students. But the only way to find out is by taking the class and trying it out if you don’t like it you can always change it before the 3rd week of school, I can’t wait for my classes next year to see what I’m taking and if I will like them are not but only one way to find out

I’m taking classes like DE English Lang, Honors Human Anatomy, and Nail Tech. I’m taking almost all advanced classes, but I think I will do just fine.

I’m taking classes like Spanish 4 and more advanced classes because I want more of a challenge and I want to learn more too!

I think that picking classes are hard cause you don’t really know what to expect and you don’t know if the teachers are nice or not and you don’t know which classes you will like or not. I feel like the school should have some type of meeting with the students and ask us what type of classes we will be Interested in. I tried to pick classes that I think I would be into but I wish they had some type of class something related to veterinarian cause I wanna be one when I get older.

I want to be a lawyer when I grow up because I really enjoy debating and such. I plan to do ASL 2, Journalism 3, Technical Theatre 2, and Criminal Justice 1 next year.

I’m taking Spanish 3, Econ, and Theatre Arts 2 next year. I want to get Econ out of the way before my senior year. I chose mostly honors for my main subjects because I like the challenge and the work definitely keeps me busy.

The classes I chose were mostly honers or AP because I’m trying to get the advanced diploma. But for my electives I’m doing Journalism 2, Intro medical, Nail tech and ROTC. I just hope I get the classes I want for the next school year!

It was interesting to see what people chose to take next year. It’s interesting to see all the options we can choose from here at Osbourn.

For my electives, I’m doing Theatre Arts 4, Journalism 3, AP Psychology, and probably either Cosmetology or Photography (I haven’t decided yet). All around, I’m just happy I won’t have to do PE again and can free up a slot with that being gone.
