Students always say that they are tired during school. Kids always say that they’re tired and can’t do their work, but they never do anything to fix it.
I asked several students for their reasons. The students I asked all have many different reasons why they’re tired at school; every student I asked had different but similar answers. The first student I asked was Darlene Cruz, a freshman. Darlene Cruz said she does feel tired during school during her first and fourth periods. I asked Darlene “If you go to sleep late, do you take after school naps? if you do how long? ” she said “Yes, I take after school naps since I get tired after 8 hours of school, my naps are usually 5-6 hours.” the reason I asked if she takes after school naps is because taking after school naps and waking up late can cause insomnia, and sleep inertia which are bad habits the brain can pick up. I also asked Darlene, “How has going to sleep late affected your school days?” She said, “Since I’ve started going to sleep late, I’ve started to miss some important topics because I would end up falling asleep in class, and I can’t pay attention or focus due to the tiredness I feel”.Â
Sleep is very important for students since their brain has to take in so much and keep it stored for almost their whole lives. It is very bad for the brain since it is still developing, especially for the younger students in age. Out of all the students I interviewed, most of them said that they go to sleep late and sleep during school, which is not ideal since they are supposed to be learning and taking in important information.
“What is the #1 thing that keeps you from going to sleep earlier?” is one of the few questions I asked Stephani Gomez, who is a senior. Her response was “I mostly stay up on my phone watching TikTok and watching Netflix,” which was a common response to this question. Asking these questions made me come to the realization that most students go to sleep late, but not all. I interviewed some students who told me that they usually go to sleep at 9 pm or earlier. 9 pm and 11 pm are the recommended times for a student ages 14-17, since the developing brain needs 8-10 hours of sleep
Certain people go to sleep early and still feel tired, and some people go to sleep late; it really depends on the habits you have and the things you do throughout the day. Many people have different times of going to sleep on the weekends and the weekdays. Giovanni Parada said, “I usually go to sleep at 12 am on weekdays and weekends. I’m usually always tired no matter what time I go to sleep.” For some people, that is different, but for Giovanni, that was his response.Â
In many different cases, some people don’t see any differences in the time they go to sleep. Leard Aliu said, “I see no difference between when I go to sleep late and when I go to sleep early since I wake up early when I go to sleep earlier but wake up later when I go to sleep late.” Â

I usually go to sleep between 10:30 and 11:00 PM, and it still feels like I’m sleep deprived when I wake up. I hate that Osbourn opens so early, as teenagers are built better to stay up late and sleep in, and that’s what most prefer doing anyway. I think Elementary schools should open before us.

I used to have a terrible sleep schedule in my first two years of highschool, and the lack of proper rest was affecting my performance in school. My grades were dropping, my attendance was horrible, and overall, I just wasn’t doing well in school. But I decided that I would change that now I was an upperclassman, and was entering one of the most important years of highschool. Now my attendance has improved and so have my grades. Sleep is important for school!

My sleep schedule is very different throughout the week. I’ve been busy with assignments last week and this week so I’ll definitely be staying up later than usual to finish it. I always wish I could sleep for longer but my assignments get in the way of it.

My sleep schedule consists of me getting about 7 hours of sleep, but on weekdays it varies since, I need to stay up to study. I definitely would say that I wish I could obtain a little more time to sleep.

I usually go to sleep around 11:30 PM, but I definitely wish I could get more sleep since I often feel sluggish during my morning classes. My experience is a lot like Stephani’s, I find myself scrolling through TikTok for way too long instead of just putting the phone away. It’s tough to balance finishing homework and relaxing, but this article is a great reminder that our developing brains really need those extra hours.

I also get very sleepy during school because of not going to sleep early. I think that if I just started going to sleep earlier I wouldn’t be as tired in school.

My sleep schedule is messed up because of extracurricular activities. After taking a shower and doing my homework, it ends up being 10 pm and then I don’t fall asleep until 11. Honestly, Aliu made a good point I don’t really feel a difference between going to bed at 9 or 11:30.

I feel so sleepy just reading about this. It sounds like a lot of kids feel like tired at school.

To be honest, I normally fall asleep at 12pm depending on what I’m doing , I would be on phone scrolling through TikTok til I fall asleep. One time I was watching on my phone and then I sleep and a few hours later my phone has low battery. This is why I put multiple alarms everyday early at night so that I don’t forget.
