The path of a high school athlete is rarely easy, often blocked by things like injury risks or unrealistic expectations. Yet, every afternoon at practice, the girls show up ready to work. Beyond the stats and final scores, what keeps them coming back to the court is a deep-seated passion for the game’s purest moments, the thrill of making a shot, and the identity built during those long hours in the gym.
There is a unique kind of feeling that fills the gym when the stands are filled with family and friends, but with that energy comes an intense amount of pressure. To keep from crumbling under the gaze of their peers, here are some things they do, “To handle pressure I don’t worry about how I play or the outcome of the game, but instead having fun,” said freshman Braelyn Krupinski, “I usually try to block out the crowd in games because I need to focus on the game and the crowd can be a distraction. However, it is nice to know that you have friends and family in the crowd supporting you,” said senior Maya Mira. “I handle pressure by trying to imagine it as practice. This way is easier for me to relieve any stress or anxiety before a game. I also try to not pay attention to the stands so I can perform to the best of my ability,” said freshman Adrianna Rodriguez.
The life of a high school athlete is not always easy. The girls on the basketball team face tough challenges that test their limits, whether it’s coming back from a serious injury or handling academic stress. “The most difficult challenge I have faced is being less experienced than my teammates. I overcome this by not being scared to ask questions and always applying corrections when given. I also never gave up when I couldn’t understand something or when things got difficult,” said Adrianna Rodriguez. “I think the most difficult challenge that I’ve had to face is being able to balance my time between school, sports, and life. I deal with this by planning everything at the start of the month so I can be prepared,” said Maya Mira. Similarly, Braelyn Krupinski said, “The most difficult challenge I’ve faced as a high school athlete is trying to balance sports, academics, and my social life. To overcome it, I figured out what was most important to me and gave more time to that part of my life.”
What about basketball do the athletes love the most?” The answer is not just about winning or stats, it is about the team bond and the thrill of the game itself. “I love the feeling of a team sport and being able to rely on any of my teammates, even outside of the sport,” said Maya Mira. “I love the connections and friendships I made, especially the ones I made playing basketball. I also love playing the older players because it pushed me to be better,” said Adrianna Rodriguez.
Ultimately, the journey of this girls’ basketball team is about much more than points on a scoreboard. It’s an experience that demands dedication to physical and mental health, the bravery to perform under pressure, and the strength to overcome significant challenges. The athletes leave the court each season not just as better players, but as stronger individuals who have found a deep love for the game and the family they built within their team. The lessons learned about self-discipline and support will last long after they play their final high school game.
