As winter approaches and temperatures drop, students begin trading shorts and T-shirts for hoodies, jackets, and sweatpants. While staying warm is important, many students still try to keep their outfits stylish. According to several students, winter fashion is all about balancing comfort, warmth, and personal style. Gabby Madison, a freshman at Osbourn, said accessories play a big role in winter outfits. “I would definitely say scarves,” Madison said. “I think scarves can go well with anything, considering all the different patterns you can choose from.” She also believes darker colors work best in winter, explaining that “dark colors stand out, especially if it snows out and the dark colors clash with the white.”
Comfort is a top priority for many students once the weather gets cold. Madison said that once temperatures drop, style becomes less important. “Once the weather gets below 50 degrees, I just don’t care anymore about how I look because soon enough everyone will just be wearing sweatpants,” she said. Xzavier Thomas, another freshman at Osbourn, agreed and said hoodies are his go-to winter item. “Hoodies help me stay warm while still looking stylish and easy to wear,” Thomas said. He also prefers simple colors, saying black and white “look clean and match almost everything.”
Some students, however, still care a lot about appearance during the winter months. David Rodriguez, a freshman at Osbourn, said looking good helps boost confidence. “Appearance matters more in the winter since looking good helps you feel confident, even when it’s cold outside,” Rodriguez said. He shared that wearing “sweatpants with a nice jacket” is a good way to stay warm while still looking put together. Rodriguez also mentioned that colors like “blue, white, and grey fit winter fashion really well because they match the colder weather.”
Older students also shared their thoughts on winter fashion. Ashton Vieyra, a junior at Osbourn, said comfort matters most to him during the winter. “I definitely care more about comfort in the winter knowing how cold it can get,” Vieyra said. He listed “sweatpants, puffers, and hoodies” as winter essentials and said he prefers brands like “Uggs and North Face.” Vieyra also encouraged students to dress for themselves rather than others. “Wear clothes that you are comfortable in, not trying to impress to fit in,” he said.
‘’I feel like it is most important to be comfortable because if you don’t feel comfortable in what you are wearing, then you’re not going to want to wear it. You can be stylish, but you would want to feel comfortable,’’ added Jasmine Viera Jimenez.
Brittney Medina, a sophomore at Osbourn, agreed that winter clothing should focus on warmth. “I would wear a not-too-short but not too long thick jacket, clothes that are meant for the winter,” Medina said. Like other students, she prefers lighter winter colors such as white and brown. Medina also said comfort matters more than style, but added that both are possible. “The advice I would give to someone is to be cozy and if you want, look good,” she said.
‘’I don’t like wearing boots; it makes me feel like I have something stuck to my legs, but I love wearing sweatpants. They keep me warm, so I don’t mind wearing sweatpants in the winter, or i could wear some big jeans or some leggings,’’ said Kayla Moore.
When it comes to brands, many students said they do not have strong preferences. Madison said she usually shops at places like Old Navy, while Rodriguez, Thomas, and Medina all said they don’t focus much on brand names and instead choose whatever keeps them warm. This shows that winter fashion does not have to be expensive or trendy to be effective.
Overall, students agree that winter fashion is about doing what feels right for you. Whether it’s layering hoodies, wearing cozy jackets, or adding accessories like scarves and hats, winter style looks different for everyone. As Madison said, with the right accessories, “you’d be considered a fashionista,” even in the coldest months.

Usually during winter I like to stay stylish but it all depends on my mood and how tired I wake up that day.

I think it is kind of crazy that people wear shorts and t-shirts in the winter. I usually wear a jacket and sweatpants to school and a big jacket if I am going out for a while.

I like this article it shows how different students at Osbourn balance staying warm in hoodies and sweatpants while still trying to look stylish when it gets freezing outside.

I definitely feel Gabby’s point about giving up on style once it hits 50 degrees at that point, it’s sweatpants season for everyone. But David is right too a nice puffer jacket can really save an outfit and make you feel more confident even when you’re freezing.

Thomas made a great point about hoodies. They can be stylish and warm. I love accessorizing and I try to make even my lazy day outfits look good. Another hard thing about winter fashion is coats. The balance between a functional, unique, and fashionable is hard to find in a coat.

This winter I bought big furry coats to stay warm and stylish. I also like to buy colorful scarves, gloves, and hats too.
