From hearing cheers to seeing tears of joy, the FIFA World Cup is one of the biggest tournaments in the soccer world. The FIFA World Cup occurs every four years and lasts about thirty-nine days, with countries from all over the world competing against each other. In those thirty-nine days that the World Cup is going on, soccer fans are filled with all kinds of emotions, whether it’s joy or sadness; the World Cup is always filling fans with emotions. With every goal and every chant, the World Cup has turned into a worldwide party that everyone is invited to join. What do our Eagles have to share about this huge tournament?

Beyond the excitement and emotions that the World Cup brings, many have traditions they like to do while the World Cup is going on. Freshman Camila Romero-Hernandez shared a family tradition that she has done for the past two World Cups. “Watching all the matches with my family and eating conchas with chocolate abuelita is a tradition that my family and I have done for the past two World Cups!” Junior Allison Sorto then shared a tradition that she has done with family for the past couple of World Cups: “Every World Cup final, my family and I gather up in my uncle’s house, and we throw a celebrational party.”

Music has always been a big part of the World Cup experience, from stadium anthems to global hits. Some of our Eagles shared some songs that remind them of the World Cup. “Brazilian funk songs remind me of the World Cup because if soccer had a sound to describe it, that would be it,” said sophomore Wendy Reyes. Along with Wendy, freshman Alejandro Lopez shared a song that reminds him of the World Cup: “Shakira’s big hit Waka Waka reminds me of the World Cup because it’s a classic and was made for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.”

Along with the music and traditions, our Eagles shared some of their favorite things about the World Cup. “I really enjoy the spirit that the World Cup brings, and the overall feeling makes me feel really good,” said freshman Alejandro Lopez. In addition to Alejandro, sophomore Kevin Sanabria shared his most memorable moments of the World Cup. ” I enjoy the spirit that people get, and how it brings the soccer world together. I just think it’s really beautiful, and it makes every minute of the tournament memorable.”

The next FIFA World Cup starts this year on June 11th, and fans can’t wait til it starts. Freshman Jonathan Kouarou shared what he’s most looking forward to and how he’s going to get into and spread World Cup spirit this year: “Seeing my country play in the World Cup for the first time since 2014 is definitely something I’m looking forward to for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.” He then added, “To show my support this upcoming World Cup, I will be buying a jersey from my country to spread spirit.” Along with Jonathan, girls’ soccer JV coach Ms. Konte shared something that she’s looking forward to for the next World Cup. “Seeing a good game is something I’m looking forward to, and since the World Cup will be hosted in the US, I’m hoping I can go watch a game or 2.”

With every FIFA World Cup comes cheers and chants that impact and motivate fans in a variety of ways. Sophomore Gabriela Valdivia-Valle shared how the World Cup has helped and motivated her; ” The World Cup motivates me to try to be better in life because if other people can, I know I can too.” Similarly to Gabriela, junior Isai Amaya shared how the World Cup inspires him to try his best in life: “The World Cup inspires me to do my best and try my hardest.”
