Have you ever wondered what other people’s makeup routines might look like? Or how people can get their makeup to look smooth and stay on the whole day ? Or do you just need tips to get you started in your makeup journey? Well we have asked students at Osbourn High School about their makeup and morning routines.
Some students can sometimes take only a few minutes while others may take over an hour.
We asked freshman Isabella Morales, how long does it take you to get ready in the morning? “I usually spend around 40 minutes just to do my hair but my whole morning routine which includes doing my skincare, makeup, getting dressed, and eating breakfast takes me around an hour and a half.”
A lot of students use different amounts of makeup products in their morning routine. Some may only use two or three products while others may use more than ten products on a daily basis. “ I use around ten products on a daily basis when wearing a full face of makeup. I’m able to wear a full face every day because I place my powders on top of liquids so that I’m able to set them. This way my makeup lasts all day throughout the school day,” said Stacy Ruano, a ninth grader. “I use fourteen products to do my full face of makeup. I use different kinds of makeup products such as palettes, foundations, and concealers,” said ninth grader Anayeli Sosa.
Not only do people use different amounts of makeup products, but they also have some steps that they prioritize more than others. “A step that I prioritize is putting on my mascara. My mascara is my last step. This step is very important, as it ties my makeup look together. So I have to make sure my lashes look good. Another step that I prioritize is putting black eyeliner in my waterline so that my lashes look fuller,” said freshman Valeria Nunez.
If something that is stopping you from starting to do your own makeup is not knowing how to, or not knowing what is an appropriate age to start doing your own makeup. “I started by wearing a little bit of makeup when I was around the age of eleven, but by fourteen years old, I started wearing a full face of makeup,” said ninth-grader Stacy Ruano.
If another reason stopping you from starting as a beginner is, not knowing the steps that you should focus on as a beginner, there is no reason to not start now, as we have talked to some students and asked them what is something they wish someone told them when they were a beginner. “I would definitely say to practice. If you don’t practice when you have the time, there may be a big chance that your makeup skills won’t get better. This could set you behind and discourage you from continuing on. I know this because the more I practiced the better my makeup got,” said ninth grader, Miley Del Cid.
Primer and setting spray are very important makeup steps in your routine as they “lock” in your makeup and keep it from smudging throughout the day. Of course, some people may have different opinions on primer and setting spray, some may think that it is important while others may think that it is not important and doesn’t do much for them. If you don’t know what primer and setting spray are, primer is supposed to smooth the skin, fill in lines, and create a less porous surface for your makeup. Setting spray is used to prevent your makeup from smudging, creasing, and fading quickly. ”I think setting spray matters but I don’t think primer does,” said junior Skarlet Reyes. “I feel like primer isn’t important as long as you have a good prep routine. You need to moisturize. Not moisturizing can make you have a cakey base. The only thing I do is use setting spray because it makes my makeup last longer,” said ninth-grader Elizabeth.
Lots of students here at Osbourn High School don’t want to buy expensive luxury makeup. Luxury makeup brands are usually not in the price range for students as they are still studying. This can lead to students reaching out more to buy drugstore makeup products instead of expensive ones. If you are also in the search for good affordable makeup brands here are some ideas.
We have asked people what their favorite makeup brands and “dupes” are. “Dupes” are items similar to one another, in this case, we are comparing expensive makeup brands/products and inexpensive brands/products. “I recommend the brands E.L.F and Fit Me. You can find them at Target, Walmart, and even pharmacies. Their prices don’t go past twenty dollars USD. I also recommend them because they don’t break out sensitive skin, which I have,” said freshman Pricila Aroche.
“I use the brand L’oreal for my concealer and I personally think that it is a good makeup ‘dupe’ for the Too Faced Born This Way concealer. I also like it because it brightens, which is another thing that I personally like,” said ninth-grader Valeria Nunez.
“I have found the Sheglam Jelly Wow to be a good dupe for the Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil. The Dior lip oil costs forty dollars, while the Sheglam one costs around six dollars. They both do the same thing, which is to hydrate and give the lips a nice glow,” said freshman Pricila Aroche.
Have you thought about changing steps in your makeup routine? It’s actually proven that changing steps in your makeup routine is good for coming out of your comfort zone and having fun with self-expression. It’s a good way for a person to try new things and have fun. You can find videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram on this topic. We asked junior Skarlet Reyes, if she changed anything in her makeup routine recently. “Yes, now I put blush before concealer and then blend blush back over it to make it look good,”
Freshman Stacy Rivera added “Yes, I have changed something in my routine. I do my eyebrows differently now and make them thinner compared to the way I used to do them.”

I don’t wear make up. The only thing I do is wash my face and put moisturizer on.

I don’t wear much make-up but s step it think is crucial is doing my eyelashes. When I don’t do my lashes I feel bald.

It would kill me to wear make up so my tip I guess would be: You don’t need make up to look good. 100% of the time you already look good and just don’t realize it.

Interesting article! Nice to know what thoughts there are on beauty routines.I don’t wear makeup as I don’t know anything about it, nor do I think my face can be helped by it, but I enjoyed reading about other people’s styles!

Although I don’t wear much makeup, I would recommend wearing lipgloss or doing their lashes. Eyelash curlers are a good way to make your eyes pop.

I don’t do my makeup now since I had acne everywhere (such a pain) and I’m just in the process of only focusing on skincare and taking care of it. I’ve done my makeup before though, didn’t turn out great, must have missed some important steps, also came out really cakey so I just gave up. Nowadays, I just curl my lashes, use mascara and lip balm and I’m done. Maybe once my acne is treated, I’ll come back to this article and look for advice when I start using makeup!!

I don’t wear makeup at all unless I go to a fancy event, but even then I still just wear mascara. I don’t like to clog my pores and whatnot.

For beginners I would probably tell them to wear concealer and blush so they have a natural make-up look for beginners but you can slowly change the steps when you get the hang of it

My favorite makeup product is the L’oreal Paris limited edition “sky high ” mascara. I feel like it lengthens the lashes very well and doesn’t clump them up. For me, its hard to find mascara that doesn’t clump, so the L’oreal sky high one is my all time favorite. I’ve bought around 7 of them, and they never clump for me, even if I do 2 or 3 layers. People say L’oreal mascara clumps, but I haven’t seen any of those people mention the Sky high one. I definitely recommend it.
