Fridays are not just normal days; it’s when music releases come at you like an avalanche. February 27 was a big day for music releases, with the long-awaited return of Bruno Mars, the drop from indie artist Mitski, and the new release from international artist  BLACKPINK! February 27 was a big day for many music fans around the world, Bruno Mars released his album, The Romantic, BLACKPINK released their EP called Deadline, and Mitski released her album called Nothing’s About to Happen to Me!

Many OHS students had opinions about the music releases. In terms of BLACKPINK’s new EP called Deadline, Munyraksmey Kong, a 9th grader, said, “I enjoyed the BLACKPINK EP”. Munyraksmey also said, “Out of these artists, BLACKPINK is my favorite”. Maylin Villanueva, a 9th grader, said, “My favorite song from this Friday’s release is in the new BLACKPINK EP, which would probably be GO. I like the upbeat vibes of the song”. Many music genres were released: K-Pop, Pop, and Indie!

Mitski’s new album Nothing’s About to Happen to Me was very anticipated by her fans. Her last studio album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, was released 3 years ago in 2023. Angela Moran, a 9th grader, happens to be a big fan of Mitski. When she was asked if she had listened to any of the new music releases, she said, “Yes, I listened to the Mitski album.” “I like all of the songs because I love Mitski,” she added. 9th grader, Iris Machado Canales, said, “I listened to both the new Bruno Mars album and the new Mitski album.” Sophia Alas Morataya, another 9th grader, said, “My favorite new music release would probably be Nothing’s About to Happen to Me by Mitski.”  “Out of all the new Friday releases, the one that resonates the most with my music taste is the new Mitski album because I LOVE all the Mitski albums. I also really like indie music,” said Moran. Sophia Alas Morataya said something similar. She said, “Out of all the new albums, the new Mitski album fits into my music taste better than the others.”

The sixteen Grammy-winning artist, Bruno Mars, was also released. OHS students have lots to say about his new album, The Romantic. Aadarshi Bhandari, a 9th grader, said, “My favorite music release from this Friday is Bruno Mars. I really enjoyed the song Risk It All, and I just love Bruno Mars in general.” Aadarshi also said, “I’m a fan of all genres, but I like Bruno Mars’ style for his new album.” Another OHS student, Kimberly Soto, a 9th grader, said, “My favorite music release from Friday is Bruno Mars new album: The Romantic. I’ve always loved Bruno Mars music and just his personality. His new album really enhances my music taste.” Kimberly also said, “My favorite artist from this Friday’s release is Bruno Mars because he is the O.G. Yearner.” Kenia Dominguez Reyes said, “To be honest, I only heard of the Bruno Mars album.” She also added, “I haven’t really listened to any of the songs yet. The only song I heard was I Just Might on TikTok.” Maylin Villanueva said, “I listened to some songs from each of the new releases, but not the whole album. I heard a lot of Bruno Mars songs on TikTok, some from BLACKPINK, and probably just one or two Mitski songs.” Machado said, “I would listen to The Romantic forever because I’m a Bruno Mars fan and I like his music.” Bruno Mars’ new album, The Romantic, is very well-liked among the students at Osbourn! His last studio album before The Romantic was released in 2016, 10 years before his latest album. His fans had anticipated his new album for a while now! Now that it’s out, they can finally enjoy some new music from one of their favorite artists.

OHS students might also be anticipating albums and EPs in the coming months. Kimberly said, “I am most excited for the K-pop group CORTIS, GREEN GREEN. The album comes out May 4th, and they are my favorite 5th-gen boy group. In my opinion, they are extremely talented and are making numbers and they only debuted 6 months ago right when we started school”. On the terms of K-pop, Aadarshi said, “I would be really happy if a unit of NCT released a new album or EP”. Another OHS student, Janet Nguyen, said, “The ones that I anticipate and that I know of are Raye and Nicki Minaj”.

Many OHS students might also ask: Why did all these international artists release albums on the same day? Munyraksmey said, “They all released albums on the same day because they wanna fight each other for money.” Kimberly said, “I think that so the releases align with the global music industry, also maybe a coincidence.” Janet said, “I think the albums were all released on the same day because new music is usually released on Fridays. I think it also might have something to do with the Grammys and other award shows.” Sophia Alas Morataya, a 9th grader, said, “I think they were all released on the same day because the music industry likes to create competition between artists and also probably for more attention.” Aadarshi said, “It was probably just a pure coincidence that all of these albums were released since they all don’t really relate to each other.” There are many speculations about why all of these albums were released on the same day!

Many of the students have their own favorite artists from the three. “My favorite artist is probably Bruno Mars, but I also like Mitski,” said Iris Machado Canales. Angela Moran said, “My favorite artist is definitely Mitski. I really like her music.” Despite the fact that she hasn’t listened to any of the new music releases, Kenia Dominguez still has a favorite. “My favorite would probably be Mitski. Her music fits into my music taste.” Sophia Alas Morataya said, “My favorite of these artists would probably be Mitski because I listen to her the most compared to the rest.” “I really like BLACKPINK,” said Maylin Villanueva. “They’re not exactly my favorite artist of all time, though,” she added.
