Writing is a form of art where any person can bring their ideas to life and is loved by many who have a creative mind. For Osbourn High School, there are a decent number of students with writing talents who would love to share their experiences when it comes to writing and a special piece of advice from a staff member.
Writing, for students, is a great approach to escape reality by creating a new one. Every student has a different type of reality they would like to create based on who that person is and their personality. “It’s a really good form of self-expression. It’s also sort of a way to escape reality by getting to create a new one and I like getting to create characters and worlds and determine how those characters in worlds will interact,” said creative writing senior Kai Johnson.
There are different types of writing that writers could choose from such as short stories, novels, poems, and many more. For this student, he loves not to just write but to also draw the characters and events in his stories to bring them to life. “I love to do graphic novels. Not only does it pass the time but it helps my drawings get better and also my writing skills. I think that the reader will understand more if there are pictures other than words,” said freshman student writer Gert Pedersen.
However, writing just doesn’t come out of the blue, it needs some thinking behind it before you can start writing. It could be from inspiration or your own ideas but writers need to do critical thinking before executing their writing. “I just sit down and think about something that most people aren’t talking about and since it’s not popular, I take it as an original idea since I want my ideas to be original. So I pick something that’s not popular and write about those,” said senior journalist Emely Luna.
Once writers finish their writing for the first time, it is not going to be perfect and writers need other individuals for their advice to make their writing at its best.“I write it to other people first before I publish it. So I’ll get one of my friends and I’ll have them read over it and they’ll give me some critiques because sometimes I have teachers read it until I publish it, and I’ll write it to others to polish my article,” said sophomore yearbook journalist Cash Davis.
Writing isn’t only just a hobby, it could help writers prepare for the near future by gaining confidence and help with college when it comes to essays and other writing required to do in college. “It’s helping my near future already because creative writing is kind of essay writing if you can utilize both skills together, especially for college essays where you have to write about yourself but it also helps with creative creativity and in forming art pieces, because everything is more influential if it has a story to it. Like nobody is going to connect with an orange but it’s like, oh this is the orange my mom peeled for me because she always peeled fruit because I always hated the skin and it’s like, oh that’s sweet. It has more of an emotional connection with your audience, so it helps with that and then also it would help with public speaking and being more confident because writing is always something to put yourself out there,” said junior creative writing student Adeline Wehner.
Writers should be open-minded to critiques and able to listen to others’ advice on how to make their writing better. Writers should be extremely proud of the feeling that they have improved. “We are always going to be improving and advising, so sometimes people would be embarrassed of their old work and you shouldn’t be embarrassed but proud by the fact that you have improved by seeing things that need to be advised,” said creative writing teacher Mr Edwards.
What do you think about writing? If you have an idea for one of your writings, I would love to read it in the comments!

I do not think I am the best writer, but what I like about writing is connoting words to sound perfect.
Josh Guzman • Nov 13, 2024 at 11:34 am
Nobody is a perfect writer! Everybody always has room to improve and I am glad because it seems you are improving a lot! Connoting words is not an easy task and I feel proud and you should too!

I like writing my own made up story but I get writers block a lot of time since I haven’t written anything since 6th grade but I still have fun making up story especially scary and fantasy ones.
Josh Guzman • Nov 13, 2024 at 11:32 am
Same here! I love to write scary stories! I am actually writing one right now and it’s a mix between sci-fi and horror!

I honestly don’t like writing because it’s such a long process but once I finish writing I get to be proud of myself for finishing.
Josh Guzman • Nov 13, 2024 at 11:30 am
That’s alright! Not everybody likes writing but I am glad that you feel happy and proud of yourself for finishing one of your writings!
Emely • Oct 28, 2024 at 10:33 am
I absouloutly love writing! I mostly do fantasy stories now and I’m also an aspiring author. Nice Article!
Josh Guzman • Nov 13, 2024 at 11:29 am
Thank you! I believe you will get far in the writing world! I would love to read one of your stories! Also thank you for allowing me to interview you!

Honestly I don’t really like writing because it takes up so much time but since I’m in journalism I kind of got used to it.
Josh Guzman • Oct 28, 2024 at 10:35 am
That is okay! Everybody has their own hobbies and might not be writing! I’m glad you got used to it because in the future, you will write more things in high school like essays!

It’s so nice to hear from other writers within our school. Personally, I really love writing fantasy with realism to it. Not only is writing art, but it’s so healthy for you. To get your ideas onto paper or a document is a wonderful thing– I encourage even just journaling down your thoughts. Releasing stress… making sense of things. Great article.

Thank you! I personally love to write thrillers because I have a wild imagination when it comes to creatures or any creepy antagonists! And I agree! Writing relieves stress from high school because I’m not getting a due date on it or getting graded on it like in writings that are required for high school.

I love writing when I am passionate about a topic because I can kind of get lost in it and it makes me forget about anything bad. It’s sort of why I’m a journalist in the first place.
Josh Guzman • Oct 28, 2024 at 10:40 am
Me too! I can also get lost in a topic when writing! I could write multiple pages and not even be halfway of all the plot I want to put in my writing!
Madeline Maltez • Oct 24, 2024 at 10:58 am
As a writer in my free time, this article really interested me! It’s nicely formatted and easy to read, not to mention the quotes about how their writing experiences are interesting as well. I like writing because it helps me express myself through words and I can expand my imagination.
Josh Guzman • Oct 24, 2024 at 11:37 am
I would love to read one of your writings if you allow me! And I agree, writing is something that I can express through.
Bri • Oct 24, 2024 at 10:58 am
I enjoy writing because I like to express myself and how I think of things, but also how others think of that topic. I have always liked writing, but not reading since it is hard for me to read. Writing is something I enjoy very much overall.
Josh Guzman • Oct 24, 2024 at 11:39 am
Me too! I’ve always hated reading. Well, not all of them. Just the readings I am forced to do for assignments. Writing for me is just more fun than just reading!
Camila Milian • Oct 24, 2024 at 10:39 am
Since elementary, I would write like a lot, my teacher would give me more than 1 piece of paper because I was known for writing a lot. Writing brings me comfort to be honest, I love writing my own random stories or just rant in a journal for fun. Writing can also be a way to express your feelings at some point! I want to continue becoming a better writer when it comes to my stories and so in the future I won’t struggle repeating the same thing over and over in sentences.
Josh Guzman • Oct 28, 2024 at 10:42 am
I struggle with repeating things in sentences too! I’ve actually gotten an assignment back in middle school about writing my own story and I have gotten a perfect score on that assignment! That is when I realized my love for writing!

nice article, its nice to see a article about how others do certain task related to literature. also didn’t know Kirby when to this school.
Josh Guzman • Oct 28, 2024 at 10:43 am
Thank you. I feel like people don’t really talk about writing when talking about art and it seriously is a very fun piece of art you can do.
