Some schools require school uniforms, where the school assigns a specific outfit for all students to wear while on campus. Most schools that require this are private schools, but some public schools have also implemented uniforms. While school uniforms spark fierce debate, they offer distinct pros and cons for students, families, and faculty. Students often feel stripped of their personal identity with uniforms, and some parents struggle with the upfront cost of specific brands. However, many parents love the resulting stress-free morning routines, while school staff value how easily uniforms allow them to identify outsiders on campus. So, how would Osbourn students feel if Osbourn were a uniform-based school?
”I feel like I would feel less comfortable because I would be wearing something that I don’t want to wear. It might make me feel self-conscious or distracted, and I wouldn’t be able to focus on having a good time. When I’m not comfortable in what I’m wearing, I tend to worry more about how I look and what others might think, instead of enjoying the moment. Being in clothes that don’t feel like me can really affect my mood and confidence,” said Jasmine Viera Jimenez.
A lot of students think a uniform makes it hard to express your personality or cultural background.”I think it would be hard to express a lot of things. For example, I know a lot of people who express their personality and culture with their outfits, and there are a lot of people who love soccer, and when their team wins, they like to show off their team, and that is also a big cultural thing,” said Eferin Mancha.
Some students, unlike the majority of teenagers, would rather attend a school that requires uniforms than one that does not. A good amount of students, such as Eferin Mancha, have mixed opinions, but can see the potential benefits of school uniforms. ”I would prefer a school with uniforms because they make mornings really simple and remove peer pressure, but I highly like the comfort that comes with choosing your own clothes. Wearing uniforms can also help families save money, since there is less pressure to buy new outfits to keep up with changing trends. Additionally, uniforms often help make students feel like part of a team, which can increase school spirit and a sense of belonging. On the other hand, being able to choose your clothes lets you show your personality and be creative with your style every day,” said Mancha.
The process of designing a school uniform involves creatively blending modern style with all-day comfort. ”If I had to design a school uniform, it would be something really simple, not too much. I would have it be a black shirt with the school logo on the front, and students could choose to wear either black or blue pants or, if they prefer, a skirt. The choice between pants and skirts would be open to everyone, based on their style, and I would not care what type of shoes you wear. I know some girls do not like skirts and prefer to wear pants, so the uniform would allow for both options,” said Viera Jimenez.
What do you think? Would school uniforms make mornings easier, or do the cons outweigh the pros? Do school uniforms heavily limit creativity when it comes to school fashion?

I think I’m kind of in the middle regarding this topic because I feel as though some days I’d love to have my outfit already planned out for me so I don’t have to worry about what to wear, but I also enjoy wearing my own clothes and expressing myself.

I don’t like the idea of school uniforms because I don’t want to wear the same thing all the time, especially when its the winter or fall and its cold outside!
