On May 1st, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was released in theaters. My family and I decided to enjoy the new film on May 2nd, at the Family Drive-In Theater in Stephens City. “I saw The Devil Wears Prada 2 in theaters a few weeks ago. I had never even heard of it until about 2 months ago, but I watched parts 1 and 2 the same day, and I enjoyed them. The plot felt real and still funny,” said Maliyah Stewart, a Journalism 1 student.
The movie opens with journalist Andy Sachs at an awards gala. She’s now a respected New York reporter, but her entire newsroom gets fired via text during the awards ceremony. She goes up to the podium and delivers the powerful quote that “Journalism still…matters!” Our school’s journalists and teachers strive to educate and inform Osbourn and keep everyone media literate.
Brianna Mira Pereira, a Journalism 1 student, said, “I originally joined the journalism program because my English teacher in 8th grade said my writing was really good, so I thought about it and joined. The website has benefited me in many ways, such as exploring new restaurants in the DMV. Journalism has opened new opportunities like interacting with new people and looking at new aspects of new topics.”
Ms. Fitzgerald, an English teacher and former journalist, said, “In college, I began working on our newspaper and literary magazine and was hooked. Journalism is a wonderful career, even if you will never earn a salary that is considered enough. As a journalist, I knew a little bit about a lot of things. I met interesting people and was able to be in places most adults never get a chance to see. I was a young woman from a poor family who became a middle-class journalist and later an educator. It was part of my journey.”
“I really wanted to do yearbook, and journalism was a requirement. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it at first, but it’s really fun, and I’m definitely taking it next year,” said Stewart.
Everybody has their own reason for staying informed. Briyanna Moody, a Journalism 2 student, said, “Journalism is relevant to me because I plan to be a writer or lawyer when I become older. Journalism has impacted me severely. I have met so many new people, and it has improved my writing greatly.”
“Journalism is relevant to me as it’s important to stay up-to-date with the news, especially in crazy political times like these. If you’re not staying informed, you’re oblivious to bad things happening,” said Jackson Doll, a Journalism 2 student.
Ms. Fitzgerald said, “Journalism is relevant to all of us. I do not believe our country would be in the position it is in if we had a true understanding of bias and media literacy. Young people actually have a much better understanding of issues than those of my own age.”
“Politics affects all of our lives, and journalism is integrated into staying involved in the environment you live in. Journalism is necessary for an informed, active democracy,” said Ian Knox, a Journalism 2 student.
Ms. Miller, the journalism teacher, said, “It is stressful sometimes, but I am obsessed with always knowing what is going on! Journalism is changing rapidly. It seems like people limit themselves to news that is designed for people with a viewpoint that already exists.”
Journalism benefits all. Stewart said, “Working on the Talon has really helped me with potentially working on a site for work in the future. I really enjoy writing…and think I could take it on as a career.”
Doll said, “Working on OHS Talon has made me a better writer over time. Journalism class has also made me interested in potentially being a reporter/journalist in the future as a career.”
“I’ve learned to be much more objective and learned to accept things from sources I may not necessarily like politically. Journalism is about collaboration at its core, and I can’t ignore work because I dislike a source. It has also taught me to respect journalism more, as I’ve personally been a part of the process,” said Knox.
Ms. Miller said, “Writing helps me to meet new people and allows me to understand new viewpoints.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 focuses on Runway magazine’s transition from print to digital and trying to save real journalism, not just the cruelty of Miranda Priestly. The new film is a surprisingly fresh take on current media. Reporters and editors everywhere, even in the movies, are trying to stay relevant, and new opportunities may be just around the corner.

I haven’t seen the Devil Wears Prada 2, but I saw the original at home over spring break. I really enjoyed the movie, although I hated every character except for Andy because they were all insufferable.
When it comes to journalism, I believe that journalism is an important aspect of life, as it’s where the general public can see what’s happening in the world, political news, and entertainment. As I said in the article, if you’re not staying informed in times like these, you’re oblivious to bad things.

I really like how you put all the different quotes from the teachers and students about how writing helps them, and it’s also cool how you connected journalism to that new movie The Devil Wears Prada 2.

It’s cool to see a movie like The Devil Wears Prada 2 show that what we are doing actually matters. I totally agree with what Maliyah and Briyanna said about how much this class improves your writing and helps you meet new people.
