Osbourn High School students are kicking off the summer with a focus on travel and seasonal style. From planning out-of-state vacations to debating fashion trends like jorts and Birkenstock shoes, students are prioritizing new destinations and their favorite summer looks over the break.
With summer break quickly approaching, many students shift their focus to traveling, which either means a flight to a different country or a road trip to visit family in another state. These trips are a major part of a summer break. “I’m going to Ocean City, Maryland, because my family and I go every year,” said Sophia Alas. “I’m going to visit my family in El Salvador,” said Brianna Rios.
A big part of summer is the pools or beaches. It can be hard to choose a favorite because they both have their pros and cons. “I like both because the beach isn’t as accessible as the pool, but the beach clears my skin,” said Adriana Rich. “The pool is so fun, especially with your friends. You can also have a little more freedom at the pool because it’s a controlled area, unlike the beach. When I go to the beach, I usually have way less freedom because of the unpredictable waters, so I have to stay in my parents’ eyesight. With that being said, the beach is also nice because it’s super aesthetic! The bright sun mixed with warm sand is just a vibe,” said Gabby Madison. “I prefer the beach. I like the waves, and there is also more shade. And when I get bored with the water, I can play in the sand,” said Katie Ho.
As the weather starts to get warmer, people bring out their t-shirts and shorts, while putting their sweaters and sweatpants away. Finding the perfect summer clothes can be hard sometimes. Osbourn students have different stores they enjoy getting summer clothes from. “My favorite store to get summer clothes from would probably be Hollister or H&M. I love a lot of the style these stores have and how they have an actual color variation and not sticking to dark, boring colors all the time,” said sophomore Malia Spriggs. “There are stores with cute summer clothes that I love, like Hollister, Pacsun, and D.Jeans. Honestly, in summer, all I’m worried about with my clothes is not sweating through them,” said Gabby Madison. “I really like stores like Hollister. Even though they are a little pricey, it is worth it because the clothes are really cute. Another place I like to shop at is Depop. The resellers have really cute clothes, and they are pretty affordable,” said Katie Ho. “I like shopping at Tillys and Hollister,” said Brianna Rios. “My favorite stores to get summer clothes are Edikted and White Fox. I love their themed clothing, and they have good color options,” said sophomore Aisha Kamara.
When you are discovering clothes for summer, you obviously want to pick clothes that are comfortable for you, so I asked Osbourn students to pick between “Birkenstocks or Crocs” and “Jorts or Shorts.” First we are going to start with Birkenstock’s or Crocs, “I pick Birkenstock’s, They are just more comfy to walk in, Crocs hurt my feet a bit after a while” said Aisha Kamara, “I would probably prefer Birkenstock because in the summer. When I’m at the beach and I have Crocs, they get wet and become squicky and loud,” said Sophia Alas, “I like Birkenstocks because they are more visually appealing than Crocs and feel more comfortable,” said Lily Roth.
Now we are going to move on to the next question: Jorts or Shorts. “I prefer shorts, because it is too hot for me to wear jorts. I also feel like with shorts, more outfits can go with them than jorts,” said Adriana Rich. “I like jorts better, because I feel they are more stylish and make my outfits look better,” said Lily Roth. “I pick jorts because they are more comfortable and stylish,” said Brianna Rios. “Honestly, I like both. If I want to tan, I prefer shorts, and if I’m going out, I prefer jorts,” said Aisha Kamara.
What is summer without a perfect summer playlist? So I asked these students to pick 3 songs that remind them of summer. “My top 3 songs that remind me of summer are Brazil by Declan McKenna, World Alone by Lorde, and Amber by 311,” said Aisha Kamara. “My top 3 songs that get me in the summer mood are Chanel by Frank Ocean, 3005 by Childish Gambino, and National Anthem by Lana Del Rey,” said Sophia Alas. “3 songs that remind me of summer would have to be Borderline by Tame Impala, Bad Bad Bad by Young Thug, and definitely a Stunna Girl song,” said Gabby Madison. “Songs that remind me of summer are SUGAR by Brockhampton, 3005 by Childish Gambino, and Good Days by SZA,” said Katie Ho. “My top 3 songs are Controlla by Drake, Sensualidad by Bad Bunny, and Soltera by Lunay,” said Brianna Rios.

I don’t really have 3 songs I like to listen to the most out of the rest during summer however I will say that this article was pretty well structured!

I love house music during the summer! The beat of the songs just fills me up with joy. I love Massive, Get It Together, and Flight’s Booked by Drake. I also prefer Birkenstocks and the beach.

I really liked this article because it’s fun to see everyone’s travel plans and what they’re planning to wear once it gets warm. I usually spend my summer at the pool with my family because it’s way closer than the beach, and we always have a playlist going the whole time. It’s cool to see that other people use Depop to find affordable clothes too, since some of those mall stores can get really expensive.

This was an interesting article. Birkenstocks are definitely cuter, but by the pool they’re not always practical. I own a lot of flip flops and slides to just slip on and get out the door.

I’m with Gabby and Katie the beach is definitely the best vibe! Nothing beats the sand and the waves, even if the pool is a bit easier to get to.
