Cheer has become progressively popular over time; it is now one of the fastest-growing female sports all around the world. It is a mix of stunts, dance, tumbling, and jumps. A lot of people get inspired to do cheerleading by watching their family or friends do it. “Something that inspired me was the scholarships, friends that come with it, and team collaboration,” said freshman Kimberly Soto. And some people just want to give it a try.
It takes a lot of courage and strength to be on the cheer team because you have to socialize with new people. “ It takes a lot of dedication, determination, and discipline. You have to be a sponge, be able to soak everything in and take corrections,” said sophomore Genesis Reyes.
There is fall cheer and also winter cheer. Some people like fall, some winter, and some both. “I like fall cheer because I love competition season, it gives me adrenaline,” said sophomore Sarah Valentina.
Every cheerleader has a strength that they feel like they are good at. “My strengths as a cheerleader are definitely taking corrections and really using them to my best extent. What I’m really good at as a cheerleader will definitely be keeping the energy up, loud voice, and having a big smile on my face,” said sophomore Sarah Valentina. Cheer has a lot of positive things. Most of the time, athletes’ favorite part of a sport is their team bond, while some just enjoy being competitive and learning new things. “My favorite skill to perform is a lib because I’m able to do it perfectly and it’s easy,” said sophomore Juliet Quinto. “Something that I love about cheer is the coach and the people in it. They are extremely helpful, they always bring in positive attitudes, and are always helping with things,” said sophomore Valeria Nunez.
Every athlete has at least one thing that they need to work on to get better at, whether it’s a stunt or a lib. “One thing in cheer I would like to get better at is a lib.” I feel like I need to tighten and lock my legs, but it is always hard for me to lock it with just one leg,” said sophomore Valeria Nunez.
Some people have been doing cheer since they were very little, some just started a little later than others, because some just get interested when they get older. “ I’ve done cheer for two years,” said sophomore Genesis Reyes.
If you want to give cheer a try or think about doing it, go ahead, don’t be afraid. Even if you are shy, you will love it.
