Imagine it’s early August, and you need to get folders and notebooks for school, but what colors will you choose for each subject? Students often use color-coordinated supplies to help better organize their classes. In this article, we will explore the colors that some Osbourn High School students use.
The question has been around forever: Is English blue or yellow? Is math red or purple? But first, let’s focus on what the students currently have. Henna Exley, a freshman, states, “Right now, for biology I have green, for math I have blue, for social studies I have teal, and for English I have yellow.” While freshman Elisa Alvrenga says, “I have green for science, yellow for history, blue for math, of course, and red for English.”
Although Elisa was happy with her choices, Henna, however, would have liked a change, as she mentions, “I would’ve liked my English to be blue and my math to be red instead.” But why, you ask? Exley explained, “I like math being red because to me, math is very studious. English, blue, because I think it’s very professional. I like teal with social studies, as it reminds me of the ocean, and we’re currently doing world history, you know, all over the world. And for biology green because it’s a life science.”
On the other hand, Elisa explains her reasoning by saying, “Personal experiences connect what colors I use. For example, green for science, because when I think of science, I think of plants, which are green. Yellow is history because I think history is boring, and yellow seemed basic to me. And blue is math because it’s my favorite subject, and blue and white are my favorite colors, but I mean, who has a white folder? Finally, red for English, as it reminds me of writing and publishing books.”
While organizing by color is important, some students may not require color-coded supplies for each subject. For example, Jacquelyn Figueroa declares, “All of my folders are black except for my English, which is blue.” This is quite similar to what Aaliyah Sancahe says, “My English is pink and my other folders are red.” Both of them have multiple folders of the same color, which is rather uncommon.
Although the question usually would start a debate, freshman Jonathan Jarret says, “Ok, I have yellow biology, orange for math, white for AP human, and green for English.” This is a really unique color scheme, but Jonathan explained, “I just choose whatever I feel like taking at the time.”
So, it turns out each and every one of the Osbourn High School students has a unique individual opinion on how to organize each subject.
But what colors are your folders? Do you side with Elisa? Jaquelyn? Tell us in the comments!

I see English as blue, math as red, social studies as yellow, and science as green. I can see English as red, but not math as blue.

I don’t really color code my folders (except for science), but if I had to choose, English would be blue, math would be red, history would be yellow, and science would obviously be green.

I don’t agree with either because I have mixed opinions on this! I correspond some colors to some subjects but not every subject in my opinion matches with a color, like Spanish for example. My folders this are all blue currently with one red binder and one black binder.

I agree with Jacquelyn, I personally just use whatever colors are available, I couldn’t take time out of my day just to make sure a certain subject is a certain color.

I love how this article shows that everyone organizes school supplies differently, there’s no one “right” way. It’s interesting to hear why students choose certain colors. What’s the most unusual folder color combination you’ve seen?

I just use blue, red, and black folders. I used to use a whole binder and stuff, but now I just have one folder. It’s unorganized but a lot of work is online now so I don’t have many papers to put.

I usually carry binders but if I were to get more folders, I side with Elisa. The colors really represent each class.

I think It’s nice that colored folders can help us stay organized and even make learning more fun.

It’s interesting that some people use the same color for all their folders. I think having different colors for each subject helps me find things faster.

This is amazing writing! I have green for bio, yellow for English, blue for math, and teal for history. Some of the teachers handed out folders and notebooks and we had less of a choice, but I’m satisfied with my color choices.

I have two folders one is black and the other is blue
Jaquelyn Figueroa • Sep 25, 2025 at 12:38 pm
My folders were listed but I side with Elisa.

I love how everyone has such different ways of choosing folder colors. It’s cool how some pick colors based on how the subject feels to them, like green for biology or red for English. it helps me stay organized and makes school a little more fun. For me, math is purple and English is blue.

I only have one folder and its pink with white stripes. but I agree with elisa
Daeden Brown • Sep 24, 2025 at 10:35 am
For my folders I’d probably go with green for science, blue for math, red for history, and yellow for English.
Larry Lizalde • Sep 22, 2025 at 11:35 am
I personally think Math is pitch black as the subject is depressing. Biology is purple, English is pink and history is white.

This is very tea.
