Cosmetology is a form of beauty and creativity where humans meet art to make people look and feel their best. From hairstyling to skincare and nail care, cosmetologists use their skills to transform appearances and boost confidence. Cosmetology is a class here at Osbourn High School, where students can practice beauty and style.
As Adrianna White, who is a senior, said, “I think a great cosmetologist is very friendly, social, patient, and always caring. I feel like I am a great cosmetologist because I am all the above, especially caring.” It’s more than just making someone look good; it’s about making them feel amazing inside and out!
In cosmetology classes, students get to practice with many different tools, such as brushes, flat irons, curling irons, and shears. These tools help them learn important skills for hairstyling, makeup, and skincare. Some students even have favorite tools they enjoy using the most. 12th grader Amiya Marshall said, “I enjoy using shears and wax. I love shears because haircutting is one of my favorite things to do in cosmetology. I also love waxing because I am very fascinated with eyebrows, and it seems to be easy for me.”
Cosmetology also gives students the chance to discover their strengths. Some enjoy the artistic side of makeup while others prefer nail care or skincare treatments. A popular choice is haircutting since it requires patience, practice, and precision. 12th grader Jennifer Hernandez explained, “My favorite topic has been haircutting because it takes some time to master it, but once you practice, you will be a master at it.”
Focus and motivation are key to success in cosmetology. Students spend hours learning detailed techniques, and every step matters. Many stay motivated by thinking about their future goals. Amiya said, “I stay motivated and inspired in cosmetology class by paying attention to every detail when the teacher is explaining, so I can get it corrected quickly. Also, getting my license for free is a good way for me to stay motivated.” Staying engaged during instruction helps students gain the most from the experience.
One thing many students wish they had known before starting cosmetology is how much work goes into the training. There are long hours of practice, and it takes patience to perfect techniques. Some are also surprised at how much bookwork and studying are involved. Isabella Mendez, an 11th grader, stated, “One thing that I wish I knew before entering the cosmetology program is needing a state-issued ID to get your license in cosmetology or even take your state board test.” Knowing this ahead of time helps students prepare for both the creative and technical sides of the course.
Cosmetology skills can be useful outside of school in many ways, from helping friends and family to saving money on salon visits. The training also prepares students for future careers. Adrianna said, “I want to open my own salon and help lots of people feel confident about their hair when they walk out. I’d also like to do famous people’s hair.” These lessons build responsibility, creativity, and confidence that can be applied in everyday life.
Cosmetology is more than just a class; it is a way to learn creativity, skills, and professionalism while getting ready for the future. Students learn both the science of beauty and hands-on techniques that give them knowledge and confidence. With focus, patience, and practice, cosmetology allows students to express themselves and help others feel their best.

Though Cosmetology isn’t for me it’s nice to see how passionate other students are about it. Seems like they’ll be using it well in the future!
