Dancers at OHS recently had the opportunity to try out for the new Dance Team. This team was created by Miss Abeyni Delgado, the Head Coach. Their season has just begun, but it certainly has been a success. Let’s start from the beginning.
“I have been dancing since I was little, and from dancing in college, I learned to love teaching others and seeing everything ‘click’ for them. It brings me joy to watch others learn and enjoy dance as much as I do. Everyone deserves to have someone to believe in them,” said Miss Abeyni Delgado.
One might wonder what the process behind all of the choreography is, because it seems like a lot of hard work. “For choreography, I listen to the music over and over again and figure out if I want to create moves to the lyrics, bass, or beat. After that, I freestyle until I get a move that pops out and go from there. It really depends, though. Sometimes it clicks right away, and sometimes I have to jump around parts of the song and then figure out how to put it together. My mood really affects it too. Sometimes I can get a whole dance done, and other times it takes me days,” said Miss Abeyni Delgado. The dance team practices their routines weekly.
We just learned how Miss Delgado creates the choreography, but how does she find the right music for performances? “I usually listen to what’s trending and then I mash music together. My close friend taught me how to mix different songs together, so I look for songs that would give the same vibe and energy I want to give,” she said.
Nine people made the team this year. If you wanted to join a dance team, what do you think your main reason for joining would be? Kendal Metz, a member of the dance team, said. “I love dance and have been dancing since I was in kindergarten, and I have a true passion for dance. I also wanted to do something for the school, and I think joining the dance team would be a good idea,” said Kendal.
The team offers a new opportunity for students who grew up loving dance. “I have a lot of experience in dance. I have been dancing since I was in kindergarten and have been enjoying it the whole time. I have been to competitions and enjoy what I do,” said Kendal.
Now, performing can be very nerve-wracking, but not everyone gets nervous performing. Nevaeh Jerden said, “Yeah, I am pretty nervous when we have our first performance, but I think I will get over it after our first performance. I just know that this year, there are going to be a lot more people at games and everyone is going to be watching the dance team,” said Nevaeh.
If you were on the dance team, what would you look forward to? Would it be building connections, or just dancing? Cadence Williams, a 9th grader on the dance team, said, “I really want to make sure that I learn about my teammates, and obviously, I am excited about the dance portion and getting to know the coaches as a person. I am looking forward to learning new dances and understanding the beats and music to our dances,” said Cadence.
These are just a few people of many on the dance team; hopefully, we get to watch them dance soon. The dance team hopes to perform at winter pep rallies and games. Good luck to the Osbourn Dance Team on their first performance when they have it!
