On May 2, 2025, the 78th annual Met Gala was held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Met Gala is annually held to celebrate the museum’s spring fashion exhibition. The event starts with a celebrity-filled red carpet, then a private tour of the Costume Institute’s annual exhibition, and then the guests enjoy a cocktail hour, usually with celebrity performances. But what catches the public’s eye is the red carpet, where celebrities show off their unique looks that match the year’s theme. This year’s theme is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. So what are some looks that stunned on this year’s red carpet?

The Met Gala’s famous red carpet displays many celebrities who collaborate with brands to show off on the runway. There are many guests at the Gala, and some stood out among the crowd. “My favorite outfit from the Met Gala was S. Coups,” said sophomore Estefania Callabero. “I really liked Teyana Taylor’s outfit,” said sophomore Nicole Garmendia. While other outfits displayed by the celebrities failed to impress some. “Saquon Barkley wasn’t the best there,” said Callabero. “I didn’t really like Colman Domingo,” said Garmendia.

Every year, the Met Gala reveals an overall theme for the Gala attendees to align their outfits with. It serves as a suggested dress code for the celebrities and brands. This year’s theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. While some celebrities showed up in the appropriate attire, “I think Zendaya did a good job aligning with the theme,” said Garmendia. “Colman Domingo dressed accordingly with the theme,” said Callabero. Some celebrities didn’t seem to align with the theme. “Ayo Edebiri’s outfit didn’t match the theme, in my opinion,” said Garmendia. “Maya Hawke’s outfit was nowhere near the theme,” said Callabero.

The theme of this year’s Met Gala, Tailoring Black Style, was chosen to highlight the importance of Black influence in the clothing industry over the decades. Most people enjoyed this year’s theme. “I liked the theme because it was a nice way to bring a spotlight to Black identity and history that has influenced the fashion industry immensely,” said Callabero. “I liked it this year because it was a theme that was important to a lot of people, and the looks were cute this year,” said sophomore Stella Bittinger.

Most celebrities who attend the Met Gala for the first time continue to attend for the following years to make an appearance in their new, flashy styles. People usually look forward to seeing their favorite annual appearance at the Gala. “I was excited to see Jaden Smith,” said sophomore Julius Fitzgerald. “I was excited to see Rihanna,” said Bittinger. The question is, did these awaited appearances disappoint? “Uhh no, I really liked his outfit this year,” said Fitzgerald. “I think she followed the theme really well,” said Bittinger.

After watching the Met Gala, how would viewers approach preparing to debut unique looks at the Gala? “I would try my best to encapsulate the meaning of the theme and mirror it,” said Garmendia. “I would try to have a meaning behind it while still going on theme,” said Bittinger.
