Have you ever noticed how many students are in school every day? Over 1700 out of the 2100 students are present at Osbourn High School each day. At least 400+ of the students are tardy to all of their class periods each week.
Most of the issues we have in this school so far are students skipping their classes and sometimes finding a way to get out of the school building. But the biggest issue is lots of students being late or absent to school and their classes.
Even after the first week of school, some students are still not showing up on time to their classes.
“I was late coincidentally to my class, but that was because I thought the class was on the complete other side of the school,” said freshman Larry Lizalde.
Around a quarter of students make it to class on time. Most of them would hang out with their peers and walk to their classes and others go to another class to finish some of their work or just to meet up with their friends.
“So in the morning, I just like to hang out with my friends. But then when the warning bell rings, I head to class and I’m usually on time because most of my classes aren’t that far away. But other than that, I just head to class right after another class,” said freshman Jackson Doll.
Students might be late to school every time, but other students are mostly absent.
Most of the students take the bus to get to school on time. Some students may be late after walking or getting ride to school. They have to wake up very early just to get ready and go to school.
“I just started walking from my home at around 7:30 and started praying,” said Lizalde.
Most students set an alarm so they get up on time for school. But this method is not foolproof.
“Some of their alarms never go off and some don’t like their classes,” said freshman Darrell Paige.
Students who don’t make it to school at all are considered absent. They might or might not have an excuse for why they didn’t come to school.
“I feel like students just don’t wanna go to school sometimes or maybe they aren’t feeling well, but don’t know how to contact the school to tell them they’re gonna be absent,” said Doll.
For people who are already excused from going to school, they might have a response on why they can’t make it to school. For example, that student might have an injury or medical issue and they can’t make it to school in time. Another example is that the student might have an appointment with a doctor or dentist. There are also many other excuses for why those students aren’t able to make it to school on time.
“I’ve been absent from school for about a week now because of my right foot having some bone bruises. Making me not be able to walk to school for a while,” said Lizalde.
In conclusion, every student who is consistently late or absent from school should learn about what they are doing to themselves right now and think about what they should do to have perfect attendance and have lots of time to make it to their classes.
When a student is tardy multiple times, they might end up in detention and face several consequences. As for being absent multiple times, the students parents might end up in court and face consequences as well. So be mindful of what you are trying to do to get to class on time.
Let us know in the comments if you were ever tardy or late! Do you have any tips for being on time?

I’m typically on time but I’ve been tardy once because of the upstairs bathroom being closed

I’m early to class sometimes. I’m normally tardy because people like to walk slow in the hallway and talk to their friends and stand in crowds. Any tips I would give you is to go straight to class.

I’ve never been tardy or late to class but have gone to class a couple seconds after the song has finished. The only reason I go late to class is because either someone is walking too slow or the hallway is too crowded.

I’m usually really early to my classes because I don’t like the stress of being in a crowded hallway but this year I’m always late to my second period on g days because first period I have it in the other building.

The usual reasons for when I am late to class is either because of a fight causing even more traffic in the halls than the usual traffic or just slow walking people in general. I usually get annoyed to the point where I just speed walk straight through them because what is causing them to be so slow?!?!??!?

I’ve only been late once or twice this year, but overall my attendance is pretty good. I usually arrive early to school so I get to spend more time with my friends in the morning time and I get to class after the warning bell.

This article has some interesting things to talk about. I am never tardy but something should be done about people’s absences and tardies.

I have always struggled with attendance, but I’m doing my best this year so far. For me, alarms never work for me and I hate relying on my mother or siblings. So for me, I take a nap when I get home and then later at night take another one but a much longer one like (5-6 hours) That way, I’m not up all night, and I wake up very early around 6. This is what worked for me, but having a stable sleep schedule is what every student needs to attend school. My sleep schedule is many times, the reason for my Tardies and absences.

I was never tardy in my first days in Osbourn. But it could be difficult because other students decide to walk with their friends and not realize that they are the reason why there’s a huge crowd behind them, causing multiple students to be tardy only because they want to socialize. I know people aren’t going to listen to me but please just go to class and walk at a normal speed to make it easier for everybody else. It’s been such an issue and it seriously kind of gets on my nerves whenever people do this. I recommend just to walk as fast as you can if your classes are really far apart. I do not recommend pushing others because it could only earn you hatred and people could get injured.

Last year, I was late almost every single day because I didn’t really care too much. now, I haven’t been late too badly. Just by a couple seconds.
Engel DiazDiaz • Sep 25, 2024 at 2:43 pm
I was tardy two or three times because I got to school a little too late so I didnt have that much time to get to my first classes or I have a doctors appointment and I got late. if your ever late or tardy to class then you should walk quicker and talk later or find a better route to your class to reach it easier.
Jackson Doll • Sep 25, 2024 at 2:07 pm
I feel like we should have more time between classes to be honest. Some students have to walk across the school to get to their next class, and they’re most likely always going to be tardy.
Larry Lizalde • Sep 25, 2024 at 1:56 pm
I’ve been tardy once for my English class. I thought it was at the west wing but it was actually at the other side of the school. Thankfully it was on the first week of school so I was forgiven.
