School is coming to an end very soon and many students are going to have jobs over the summer, but where are Osbourn students planning on working and why are they working there? I asked many different Osbourn students where they wanted to work this summer and got various responses.
“This summer I plan on working as a host at a restaurant called The Black Sheep,” said Vivian Nguyen. Lots of older students at Osbourn work at restaurants mostly as hosts but even sometimes as waiters and waitresses. “I enjoy hosting at The Black Sheep because of the community around me and I get to socialize with a lot of different people,” said Vivian Nguyen. Working at restaurants can give people great social skills because they are talking to different people and experiencing how to deal with people in different environments.
Other than hosting at restaurants or waiting tables, a lot of Osbourn students work at fast-food restaurants. “This summer I will be working at McDonald’s as a cashier,” said Jamie Jones. Lots of students at Osbourn work at fast food restaurants or retail because they hire young people and they hire more often than other jobs. “This summer I will be working at Sweet Frog because I enjoyed working there last year,” said Izzi Hoover. Other than fast food there are other chains where people work like Sweet Frog and Tropical Smoothie.
There are also places where students at Osbourn work where kids and families host parties or just go to have a fun time. “This summer I am going to be working at Chuck E. Cheese and hosting parties for little kids,” said Amaya Brooks. Chuck E. Cheese is a very common place for kids to have parties or just go to have a good time, but places where parties are hosted still need employees to work and manage the parties while the kids are playing and having a good time.
Finally, an industry where a lot of teenagers work especially during the summer is at pools or waterparks. “This summer I plan to work as a lifeguard at Manassas Park Community Center,” said Henok Emun. Lifeguarding is a very popular job for teenagers in the summer because of the age that they hire. Other than lifeguarding there are other positions you can work at a pool even if you don’t want to lifeguard or don’t know how to swim. “This summer I plan to work at Signal Hill Water Park selling food and checking tickets,” said Ashley Florez.
In conclusion, Osbourn students work at various different places, from restaurants to pools to even Chuck E. Cheese, but kids having jobs while they are in high school comes with many benefits other than the money they earn from the jobs.
