Many events in schools highlight good times and capture school spirit. It could be football games, afterschool clubs, e-sports, pep rallies, etc. One event seems to be a staple in schools in the U.S. so much so that they even include it in movies and TV shows. If your mind didn’t go “Talent Show!” then it’s probably because we haven’t had one at OHS since before COVID-19, but how does everyone feel about that? Do people want a talent show here or has it become a relic of the past?
It turns out that many people have experienced talent shows even before high school. Even people who haven’t remembered “school assemblies” where everyone would go into one area to watch or listen to something. “I used to be in talent shows. I did cheer, played piano, and sang when I was younger,” said junior Lorena Olmos. She did these things throughout her elementary and middle school years. Who’s to say she doesn’t want another shot to show off a little bit.
As I mentioned before, in previous years, there was a talent show at OHS. In the past, Ms. Rubach sponsored the talent show. This was over 3 years ago so none of the students here would remember unless they got held back since it was before COVID,” said theatre teacher Mr. Steven Kite. The possible memories we could create with a talent show could be spectacular especially if there’s a prize involved.
When there are big events where people showcase a passion or talent, often, interest in it skyrockets. Most times people just want to watch and be entertained, but for those us us who feel we have something to show off, it feels like this moment was meant for us. While there are those talents that people find interesting there are also others that people find unentertaining. “If there was a talent show I would go, for real! I would probably rap if I was part of it, but I would just wanna watch. I want to see dancing as an act in the talent show, like multiple people. One thing I don’t like in talent shows is magic tricks. There’s nothing really special about them since I’m not a little kid,” said sophomore Xavier Bennet.
Big events often require supervision and or security. When there are a lot of people in one area things tend to get chaotic. Teenagers especially end up causing trouble in groups due to excitement and getting lost in all the fun. “I’m expecting acting and singing…I’d absolutely be willing to work as security for the talent show,” security guard Lina Aguilar S. Leaving us with one more issue to deal with approval.
“A talent show wouldn’t be able to happen this year due to how many events we already have planned. We have something called international night coming up soon. You might be able to fit a few acts in there,” said sports and activity director Mr. Ellenberger.
So sadly, we may not have one this year, but word from our principal doesn’t rule out the fact that next year is still a possibility “We could definitely get a talent show here. You should talk to one of the Fine Arts teachers to make sure you have a sponsor. As a prize for a winner, we could have a trophy made by students. We could start a tradition and call the trophy by our school name, so when you win a trophy, you win an Osbourn,” said principal Mr. Pflugrath.
If there was a talent show at Osbourn it would bring about all sorts of excitement and school spirit that we may not have known was there. Would you participate or come and watch?

If osbourn had a talent show I don’t think I would personally participate but I think I would have a good time watching one and I think it would be interesting.

I feel like a talent show would be a really cool idea! I’ve never been to one before, but I’ve always seen them online, and they always look like fun. It would be interesting to see what the talents at Osbourn are.

i am pretty sure there used to be one at the school, my friend told me there was one like last year or the year before that. I’d probably go because a talent show sounds super cool and entertaining.

If I were to be in a talent show, I have no clue what I would perform. The only real talent that I think people would be interested in from me would be my rhythm game game play. Even then, there are amazingly talented people at this school who are probably much better than me!
