Class selection for next year is right around the corner! So the important question is: what are the important steps you should know before you decide?
First off, what happens during the class selection process? “Over the next few weeks, you will have several opportunities to explore classes and talk to your teachers, potential future teachers and your school counselor about the courses you should take,” explained Ms. Laura Rotella, who is the head of counseling at OHS.
It’s good to make sure you talk to your school counselor and teachers about courses you might consider taking next year. Your teachers would probably give you the information that would be most accurate for you. They should be able to explain all of your options for that subject area. It is important to listen and learn about these options. The course selection fair, scheduled for January 16 will also help students to learn more details about elective courses. “Nothing is worse than showing up to a class next year, thinking you will be doing one thing, and finding out, it’s nothing like you thought,” explained Ms. Rotella.
Some important dates are coming up. This upcoming week will be Teacher Feedback Days. “This is where your teachers will share with you their recommendation regarding your readiness for the next course in that subject area, For example, if you are in English 10, do you take English 11, English 11 Honors, Dual Enrollment, or AP? Your teacher will help you make the decision that is the best fit for you,” said Rotella.
On Tuesday, January 16th, during the school day, there will be an in-house course selection fair, “This will be an opportunity for you to explore 4 classes of your choice to help you solidify the courses you want to take next year. Make sure you choose and visit the classes that you are actually interested in learning more about. You will be exploring different classes and teachers and getting to know them and the class so you can be comfortable when you start the school year, already knowing the class and teacher. To help select your four classes, you are highly encouraged to visit our website and review the Program of Studies prior to the fair,” said Rotella.
“All students will meet with their school counselor for individual academic advising. Students will come down by grade level and specific course,” said Rotella. Everyone should know their school counselor by now. If you do not know who your counselor is, check the school website. From January 17th until the end of the month, the current juniors will meet with counselors during USVA History Classes. For freshman and sophomores, these meetings will be held during Health and P.E Classes.
