According to the Sanrio website, Hello Kitty was created by Yuko Shimizu on November 1, 1974. She is about five apples tall and weighs about three apples. Hello Kitty wasn’t given a name when she was first created; she was known as the white cat, but her products would say Hello, so the nickname Hello Kitty was created. Hello Kitty’s first product was a plastic coin purse that was made in 1975, yet the iconic cat is still popular today and can be seen throughout the hallways of OHS.

There are many different Hello Kitty items such as Hello Kitty sweatshirts, perfumes, purses, mirrors, and plushies! They even have Hello Kitty and Friends Crocs and many more items all over the world. If you come to Osbourn High School you will see many students with Hello Kitty items. Many students have key chains of Hello Kitty on their backpacks. “I have a Hello Kitty plush, some stickers of her, and some sweatpants with her on them,” said Valerie Dominguez. “I have even watched Hello Kitty and Friends, and I thought it was a very joyful show. It’s really about friendship, sharing, kindness, and family,”  Valarie continued.

Hello Kitty’s popularity has increased a lot since she was created, and her popularity increased even more around 2022. Why may you ask? Well, many people have seen many things on social media such as TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and many more social media platforms. Hello Kitty’s fan base has found her to be a cute, joyful, and colorful character. “I have never really found interest in Hello Kitty as a child, but when I see her now, she is a cute and very petite character,” said Rosa Santos.

Some women and teenagers like Hello Kitty because she was a big part of their childhood and they just always liked Hello Kitty because of her cuteness. “Hello Kitty was a big part of my childhood because I saw a cartoon show of her. I always liked her since then, and watched the show on my tablet as a little kid. I also had many Hello Kitty outfits and even had a Hello Kitty piñata for my birthday when I was younger,” said Ashley Carranza.
