Some students at Osbourn like having small snacks, listening to music, and being on their phones while doing their work during class. But the issue is that some teachers may not like students to eat, listen to music, and be on their phones during their teaching time, and claim that it is disrespectful. Some students disagree with that statement and think that eating, listening to music, and being on their phones in class are acceptable behaviors at certain times.
“I think an inappropriate time to listen to music is when the teacher is teaching or giving instructions. Therefore I think it is disrespectful. But if you have free time or just time to do your work alone, I think there is no problem with it,” said freshman Evelyn Sejas.
“In my opinion, I think teachers should allow students to eat in class because sometimes they might not like the school lunch or they just might not get full from it. So I think a student should be able to eat in class because a little snack won’t hurt anyone, as long as they clean up after themselves” said freshman Genesis Revolorio.
“My type of music is calming, therefore it does not distract me from continuing to do my schoolwork or listening to the teacher talking or just giving instructions in general,” explained freshman Graidys Rivera.
“I think it might distract a teacher if a student has headphones or airpods in, and they can actually hear the student’s music, because it means that the student is blasting their music and cannot hear anything else that’s happening around them. I also think it might annoy a teacher if a student is eating something that causes a lot of noise, like for example a big bag of chips. And it won’t only distract the teacher, it might distract other students as well,” said freshman Jennifer Lopez.
“Honestly I think that teachers should be allowed to have a snack in their classes as long as they allow the students to eat as well,” said junior Gabriella Claros.
“I think students should be allowed to use their phone in class, in case an emergency occurs in their family and someone is notifying the student,” said freshmen Graidys Rivera.
“Students should be allowed to use their phones in class, even teachers might encourage them to if their school computer is not working and they can log into the lesson on their device! Students also might need a break. We have four long classes and lunch is not that long, so some students might just use their time to eat and not use their phone or other electronic device, so I think a little electronic device break between activities is not a very bad idea for the students who might want a little break from all the work,” said freshmen Jennifer Lopez,
Overall, the students at Osbourn High School think certain behaviors, such as being on their phones, eating in class, and listening to music are acceptable at certain times.
What is your opinion on these behaviors? Should teachers allow snacks, phones, and music during classes?

This is a good article, but Graidys has a point because there’s a lot of students who can multitask such as listening to music while doing work.

i feel like they should allow freedom to students to do whatever works best for them, and teachers should limit them once the students misbehave and of coarse hand them back once they’re back on track.
