The dress code enforced at Osbourn sparked the attention of many students who noticed that the majority of the clothing restrictions are mostly applied only to girls. The majority of the people dress-coded are female. Dress code mainly focusing on females causes females to be uncomfortable and become self-conscious. The dress code can also create physical discomfort, especially on hot days when girls wear shorts and tank tops to feel comfortable in the heat.
“One of my close friends was told to “cover up” because her shirt was too revealing. This was a pretty uncomfortable comment and made my friend self-conscious. A few days later I wore the same shirt and nothing was said to me,” said a junior here at Osbourn. The dress code states ” Any excessive show of skin is inappropriate.¨ No tank tops or halter tops, crop tops, strapless shirts, garments with plunging necklines, or other attire that exposes midriffs or cleavage are allowed. If the dress code is being enforced fairly like the district dress code states, then these types of inconsistencies shouldn’t be happening and making some females feel self-conscious or uncomfortable.
Clothing fits differently on different people of different shapes and sizes. “I do not think dress code should exist because people are shaped differently,” said senior Aylani Ruiz. When wearing a crop top, a taller girl would have a shorter top than another girl with a shorter torso. Some females don’t intend for shirts to be as short as they are, they just proportioned differently.
“I don’t think that dress code is important because if I’m coming here to learn, Why are we so worried about what I wear? I feel that clothes are made to present ourselves,” said senior Aylani Ruiz. Every day famous people use clothing to express themselves. Dressing up is one way to feel confident. When females get told that what they are wearing is too revealing, It shuts down that confidence. Females should be able to feel comfortable when coming to school and be able to embrace their style proudly. “I would change the midriff rule because you can wear what you want to a certain extent, if it’s a cute little top, you should be fine,” said senior Genevieve Velez. Females shouldn’t be scared of getting dress-coded for wearing current styles.
“I don’t think what I wear distracts other students from learning because they don’t even worry about me. I think some teachers are just being extra,” said senior Genevieve Velez. The district dress code also states that “students are prohibited from wearing clothing that causes an actual distraction from or disturbance of any school activity. What I wear shouldn’t distract others from learning. If they have a problem with it, then it’s on them” said an anonymous sophomore. Most schools have these dress codes in place to maintain a safe learning environment with no distractions. However, most of the time they do the opposite, making girls miss class time, making them self-conscious, and teaching them that they are a distraction to boys.
“Guys can lift their shirt up and sag but nobody says anything to them,” said freshman Veronica Delcid. Many argue that certain styles can be distracting to boys during class, but this ideology prioritizes boys’ education, putting the blame on girls instead of teaching boys to manage their emotions and behaviors.

honestly i get that they’re just doing their job, But i absolutely hate when they make side comments!!!! like i had a friend get told back at Metz “why are you showing your stomach, this isn’t a club” and she was also wearing a jacket on top, so why did she have to be so derogatory??
