Here at Osbourn, there is a ‘question of the day’ board in the library. One day, I went with my friend and saw the question ”Are hot dogs sandwiches?” We disagreed and debated about it.
We were both biased towards our own opinions and knew we had to find the true answer.
Some people classify them as sandwiches, but most don’t. “Hot dogs are not sandwiches because their structure and cultural identity set them apart. A sandwich typically consists of two separate slices of bread with fillings layered between, whereas a hot dog uses a single partially split bun that cradles the sausage. This bun acts more like a vessel than a traditional sandwich foundation. Beyond the mechanics, hot dogs have carved out a distinct culinary category with unique toppings, preparation methods, and a cultural presence that separates them from the sandwich
world,” said Analiyah Esparza
“I personally think that, just because stuff is between two pieces of bread, it doesn’t make it a sandwich. Secondly, a sandwich is like, straight up, while a hot dog is sideways,” Janail Bullock said.
Hot dogs are not sandwiches. The reason why is because an actual sandwich is not long like a hot dog. Another reason why I think they shouldn’t be classified as a sandwich is because of the sandwich and hot dog methods of folding paper,” Sandy Doris Huinac Barrios said, bringing up a very valid point.
“If a hot dog is a sandwich, then why is there a hot dog and a sandwich way for folding paper? It’s because hot dogs are different from sandwiches; they’re not sandwiches, they’re just hot dogs,” Sandy explained.
“I personally don’t think they’re sandwiches because they’re in their own category. Just like bagels aren’t called sandwiches, but just bagels,” Yahir Alvarez said.
Anything can be sandwiched between bread, but does that really make it a sandwich? Sometimes, the bread and toppings matter. “They are not sandwiches because a sandwich has multiple toppings held by two different pieces of bread. A hot dog is just one sausage being held in between one semi-cut piece of bread,” Allison Avila said.
“Hot dogs are not sandwiches because sandwiches have bread that is separated into two parts. Also, you do not put lettuce or tomatoes on hot dogs. You don’t put the usual sandwich toppings on hot dogs because it’s not between two pieces of bread, so the toppings might fall out or to the side, completely missing the point of sandwiches. It’s sandwiched, so everything in between doesn’t fall. Hot dogs don’t have that, they are not sandwiches,” said Gisselle Flores.
“Calling a hot dog a sandwich is like calling a taco a wrap- technically close, but missing the point,” said Analiyah.
“It’s like saying a taco is a sandwich just because it has toppings and it’s sandwiched between two shells,” said Janail.
However, not everybody is that specific. Some people see toppings and bread and just call it a sandwich. “Hot dogs are basically sandwiches because they both have all the same ingredients that tortas have, and tortas are considered sandwiches,” said Savannah Santiago and Allison Recinos.
“Hot dogs are sandwiches because they have buns and meat. They have buns and they have toppings and meat, just like any other sandwich,” said Fatima Melgar.
Are hot dogs really sandwiches? Personally, I don’t think they are. I think the most distinct part about sandwiches is the fact that they’re between two pieces of bread and go from top to bottom, not sideways like a hot dog.

I think hot dogs are sandwiches because a sandwich is just bread, meat and any toppings and sauce that you want you can customize a hot dog and a sandwich however you want and some people use bar bread to make a hot dog. Also the sub they sell at Subway are made like hot dogs so if a sub is a made like a hot dog but people say a sub is a sandwich they a hot dog would also be a sandwich because its just two piece of bread and meat topping and sauce so that’s why I think hot dogs are sandwiches.

I don’t think hot dogs are sandwiches because like what sandy said and that they are in there own category just like bagels and bagels look more similar to a sandwich and I don’t call a bagel a sandwich so why would a hot dog be a sandwich if It doesn’t look like a sandwich.

To me hot dogs are not sandwiches and feel like hot dogs should stay being their own type of food category.

To me, hot dogs are really both sandwiches AND tacos. It just matters how you consume it and the specific case

This topic is very interesting and this was a very huge debate in my English class as a warm up. I like to think I can see both sides of the argument, and here is why. I see why people strongly stand by the idea of them not being sandwiches, because like Analiyah said, they aren’t two separate slices of bread. While this seems like a strong argument, it also brings up the question of if a sub is then not considered a sandwich. Subs aren’t technically two pieces of bread as they aren’t split, instead they consist of a slit where the fillings are put into, just as a hot dog bun is built.
Another part of this argument concludes that the structure of a sandwich is standing straight on one bun and builds up, but what else is structured that way? Burgers. This raises the point of if people then consider burgers sandwiches even though they’re classified differently, despite following the same build and typically the same toppings, just a change in the type of meat.
If we dive into the topics of names, and how things like tacos or things of the sort aren’t classified as a sandwich, despite having meat and often some kind of veggie, then how come ice cream sandwiches are considered ‘sandwiches’ if they aren’t consistent of a bun or meat, and instead typically cookies and and ice cream filling??
As you can see the debate is a huge loop hole, and the definition of a sandwich varies around the world, but with such a broad definition and idea of what exactly is a sandwich, it’s hard to say if a hot dog really is or isn’t a sandwich based on the sources and beliefs of each person.

I don’t think hot dogs are sandwiches because it doesn’t make sense for them to be when not much goes on a hot dog like a sandwich.

Well if you really think about it, a hotdog is a sandwich. A sandwich consists of bread and something in the middle, which hotdogs match the category. Just take the philly sandwich as an example. It has the same structure as a hotdog, but with different ingredients. If it wasn’t a sandwich, then it wouldn’t be called a philly sandwich. I can see why people disagree though.

As the odd one out I would say it is. I still enjoy food nonetheless.

I think that hot dogs are not sandwiches because it’s not even shaped like a sandwich.
