According to the Sanrio website, Sanrio is a Japanese company that designs products that focus on the Kawaii segment of Japanese culture. They have a ton of products, from stationery to clothing. They’re most notably known for Hello Kitty, Kuromi, and My Melody.

All around OHS, you can see people with different Sanrio-related items. Whether that’s keychains or clothing. Sanrio can be recognized all around OHS. All of these people have different characters they like for different reasons. It can be their aesthetic, or maybe even their personality.

Kuromi is a character that resembles a rabbit-like creature. She wears a black jester’s hat with a pink skull on the front. A lot of people like Kuromi for her design. “My favorite Sanrio character is Kuromi, I really like her aesthetic and persona, and her design is super cute! She’s a little crazy, but she’s my favorite,” said freshman Kamila Ulloa.

My Melody is a white rabbit with a pink hood that covers her ears. “My favorite character is My Melody because she’s kind, sweet, and her design is really cute,” said freshman Kimberly Miranda.

Another super popular character is Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty is a catlike character with no mouth, and she usually wears a red bow on her left ear. From 1974 to 1975, Hello Kitty, Little Twin Stars, and My Melody were created, Since then they have become iconic to many generations.  “I am an old-school Sanrio fan! I have loved Hello Kitty, Little Twin Stars, and My Melody since I was in elementary school,” said journalism teacher Ms. Miller.”

Some people don’t really like Sanrio characters for their aesthetic or personality, some like the characters because they remind them of their childhood. “I don’t really know the characters other than Hello Kitty, but Hello Kitty reminds me a lot of my childhood because there was always a lot of Hello Kitty-related things growing up,” said freshman Cindy Hernandez.

As mentioned earlier, Sanrio creates a lot of different merchandise, but that doesn’t stop fans from drawing their own designs of the character, “I have drawings of Kuromi,” said Ulloa.

Sanrio even sells jewelry and accessories of their characters, “I have Kuromi earrings, a necklace of Kuromi, and a Cinnamoroll necklace,” said Ulloa.

Another extremely popular thing Sanrio is well known for is its plushies, which a lot of people buy because of their cute designs. “I have a Kuromi plush as well,” said Ulloa.

Stickers are another popular item, that you can use to decorate almost anything. “I own Hello Kitty, Kuromi stickers, My Melody stickers, and a Pompompurin sticker,” said Ulloa.

Squishies are another item. Squishies can help relieve stress, and are even better with a cute design, “The most recent item I’ve bought is a Cinnamoroll squishy, the design is really cute,” said freshman Leslie Delcid.

Sanrio characters have different versions, a popular one is the Hawaiian Hello Kitty. “For some reason, I love my tropical Hawaiian Hello Kitty most because she has a tan and wears a lei and grass skirt. I want to live her life and be on vacation,” said Ms. Miller.

Sanrio characters are loved for their designs, personalities, or even what they remind us of.
