With Prom season in full swing, Talon reporters checked in with Mrs. Geanine Garcia-Poindexter (Osbourn’s PTSA secretary) regarding plans for this year’s After-Prom event.
Although the Prom itself is planned by the junior class SCA and their sponsors, this portion of the Prom celebration is actually planned by the PTSA. Here is what we found out!
What is the After-Prom event?
The OHS After Prom is an event sponsored by the OHS PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) that provides a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment for our teens to enjoy a memorable night after the prom on April 12, 2024. The After Prom depends on donations and volunteers and is not tied to the Prom. We need to raise $6,000 to deliver the same experience we offered last year when we had it at the Freedom Center and offered it for free to the 300+ students who attended.
Who is invited?
Senior and Junior OHS students.
Where is it held?
The location depends on how much money is raised. Previous venues for After-Prom range from being at OHS to outside venues, like the Freedom Center.
What are some activities planned for After-Prom?
The activities also depend on how much money is raised. Last year, we raised enough funds to hold After-Prom at the Freedom Center, so students enjoyed access to their pools, sports courts, community rooms, etc. The students had lots of options from swimming to hanging out in the community room to play board games. I volunteered last year, and it was wonderful to see all the teens having a great time. They were spending time together with their friends, swimming, playing, and talking. Some of them said that was the first time they had time to just be themselves outside of school. This is especially important for seniors who may never see each other again after graduation.
Why should students go to After-Prom?
They should go to After-Prom to continue enjoying their night after the Prom is over. We want our students to create more fun memories on that night, then go home safe, and wake up the next day rested and full of great memories. Unfortunately, statistics show that Prom/Graduation time can be one of the most dangerous times for teens. Our goal is to provide a fun and safe place to hang out, talk, play, etc. so everyone goes home safe. I still remember how I felt after my senior Prom because I had a great time and didn’t want it to end. Once it was over, I had nowhere to go where I would feel comfortable hanging out with friends without the pressures of drugs or alcohol. Having an After-Prom would have been a great option!
How is After-Prom funded?
It is funded through donations from anyone willing to donate. We need to raise $6,000 to deliver the same experience we offered last year. Family, friends, community members, businesses, etc. can donate, and they do not have to be in Manassas City or have children at OHS. They can either donate via this link: OHS After Prom by the PTSA | Givebacks (memberhub.gives) or write a check to OHS PTSA and mail it to the school (ATTN: OHS After Prom, 1977 Eagle Way, Manassas, VA 20110).
Students may also create their own fundraiser page from our funding site and share the link with others. Last year we had a lot of family and business donations. We hope to do the same this year.
What should students wear to After-Prom?
It depends on the location and the activities we offer. For example, if we raise enough to do it at the Freedom Center, they should wear comfortable clothes to play games like volleyball and/or just hang out and play board games. They should also bring a swimsuit to join their friends in the pools. We will share more information once we have secured a location.
What time should students arrive to After-Prom?
We would like to offer After Prom April 12-13, from 11:30 PM – 2:00 AM, but once again, it depends on how much money we can raise.
Can you go to After-Prom if you do not go to Prom?
Yes, students are welcomed to the After-Prom even if they do not attend the Prom.
Do you need to sign up ahead of time for after prom?
Yes; we will need a headcount so we have enough volunteers to maintain security and safety ratios. We will also need student parents/guardians to sign a Waiver. It’s important they are aware of it because we had some challenges last year with some students not having their waivers. We don’t want to turn anyone away so they must have their signed waivers.
Does After-Prom have a theme?
There is no theme yet, but once we have a location, we will select a theme. Personally, I think a throwback to the 80’s theme would be fun, but I’m biased. Ha, ha!
Is After-Prom free for students to attend?
We would like to make it free for students, like it was last year, but it depends on how much money is raised.
