At Osbourn there are countless fun and interesting clubs- whether you are seeking something social and extravagant like DnD club, or representative like HLA, or something positive and helpful like the sustainability club. However, a club that caught my attention and had me curious was the Girl Empowerment Club. What do they do? What are their goals? What is their message and reasoning? In this article, we uncover those unanswered questions and discover the fun awareness of the Girl Empowerment Club.
The Girl Empowerment Club is filled with many OHS girls who were happy to give us insight into what they attempt to do in their unique club.
“We lift each other up. We try to do a lot of building each other up. We do different things like vision boards, arts and crafts, help each other, set goals…stuff like that. We try to help each other achieve different goals,” explained senior Sarah Khaleel
“We meet up every week or every other week and we just talk about how we can build each other up and plan for our futures and help each other,” said junior Ava Grant.
“I created the club to help girls become all they are meant to be, to believe in themselves, to feel good about the unique people they are, and to help them discover their special gifts. My motivation is my students. I see the need for young ladies to gather, empower, and support one another,” said the founder of the Girl Empowerment Club, Ms. Vincente.
The definition of “Girl Empowerment” is “accepting women’s viewpoints, making an effort to seek them, and raising the status of women through education, awareness, literacy, and training.” The Girl Empowerment Club embraces this by attempting to assist other women in the club with different kinds of activities, mostly school work. “We focus on future type goals- so we help each other apply for colleges, just like character building type stuff,” said Sarah.
The club members also help each other with applying and writing essays for different colleges, and it sort of works like a study group as well – which could be nice if you’re having trouble with turning in assignments or need assistance during the college application process.
Every group has their own set of goals that they would love to accomplish, so what goals does the Girl Empowerment Club want to achieve and how do they help?
“No, we are not just doing feminist stuff. Our goals are to increase the participant’s ability to make safe and healthy choices, increase self-confidence and self-esteem, and increase appropriate interpersonal interaction. Self-worth and happiness are also key components,” said Vincente.
The club goals are to prioritize making women feel like they are in a safe place by uplifting and assisting members in their club. Their motivation behind these goals is to make the members of the club feel like they are secure and happy because other places may fail to do so. Ms. Vincente noted that she created the club because she wanted to boost and make women feel special about themselves, and to overall make them feel happy and grateful for who they are in this world. The goal of this club is to make a safe place and this club is great at achieving it, according to their members.
So what do members of this club want non-members to know?
“Don’t be afraid to be try new things and join new clubs, because it can really make a positive impact in your life,” advised Ava.
“Through activities, games, direct instruction, and conversation, girls are aided in developing their whole selves. Women’s empowerment has 5 components: women’s self-worth, their right to have and determine choices, their right to have access to opportunities and resources, their right to have power to control their own lives both within and outside the home,” said Vincente.
