Student members of Osbourn’s Positive Change Ambassadors and Student Council Association led their fellow Eagles in celebrating Unity Day on Wednesday, October 18.
Unity Day is a special day during National Bullying Prevention Month, also celebrated in October. The key message of Unity Day is to unite for kindness, courage, and inclusion, to prevent students from being bullied. Participants are encouraged to wear orange on this day because it’s described as sunny and warm and is commonly associated with safety, visibility, and protection. “Wearing orange is to wear and share the message and spread unity,” explained Ms. Regan Hein, one of the sponsors of the Positive Change Ambassadors.
The day’s activities included a Wear Orange campaign, video features created by school counselors (on the morning announcement show), reminders to show kindness throughout the building, chalk messages against bullying outside of the school, and an anti-bullying-themed photo booth at lunches.
Positive Change Ambassadors took the lead in writing positive messages in chalk in front of the school’s main entrance. “We collected kind messages from our students to counteract bullying and harassment and used chalk to display them on the school sidewalk,” explained Mrs. Luz Kresge, one of the sponsors of the Positive Change Ambassadors.
The uplifting messages were thought-provoking and made students feel inspired to be better humans.
I was inspired by the quote “Never back down, Never what? Never give up,” said freshman Angela Ogbeide.
I loved the quote “Don’t worry, be happy!” added Kira Ellis-Williams, also a freshman.
My favorite chalk quote was “Keep doing what you love, even if the world is hating on you,” said freshman Graidys Rivera.
The anti-bullying-themed photo booth was set up in the cafeteria during all lunch shifts on Unity Day.
“No one should ever experience bullying in our school community. We set up a photo booth for students and staff to enjoy pictures with their friends. Adaptive class students made the props for the event, and we all wore orange! The photo booth was a huge success,” added Mrs. Kresge.
