Many students and teachers at Osbourn High School have an interest in martial arts. Here’s why. Martial arts aren’t just about fighting; they’re a way to build confidence and stay fit. Whether it’s Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, Taekwondo, boxing or something else, more people are getting more into the challenge and the discipline.
There are so many reasons why people choose to do this sport. It could be about the techniques and the culture, or just learning how to fight in general. For instance, Mr. Ryan Deniega, a world history teacher at Osbourn High School, does Muay Thai. “I chose this type because I like watching striking sports and boxing,” said Deniega. “Something I grew up with is WWE, and I wanted to learn the techniques that were used in that. I am also interested in how the fighters train, how they train that way. I wanted to be like them because of exercise, and I wanted to learn their technique and hopefully be like them.’’
Another person at Osbourn High School, freshman Cindy Martinez, said, “I chose Karate because it is one of the best forms of martial arts out there. I also enjoy how their techniques are, and a lot of people do this type of martial art.” A lot of people are interested in martial arts because it’s about improving and being confident in what they are doing. In fact, training for martial arts can be beneficial for both physical and mental well-being, improving fitness, focus, and confidence.
There are a lot of ways people change when they’re doing martial arts. For example, people start changing because they used to be scared and now they’re confident in it. For instance, Mr. Deniega said, “One of the best improvements I have seen in myself is cardio. I have been running 6-minute miles. Mentally, the best thing I learned was hard work and discipline.’’ There were also other students who had similar reasons for doing martial arts. Freshman Xavi Recinos said, “It impacted me to stay humble and confident in what I am doing, and it has shown me how to believe in myself when nobody else does. Martial arts has helped me become confident to keep moving forward and never give up when life is hard.’’
There’s something that people still struggle with today, which is an improvement from martial arts. Martial arts help people improve in a lot of ways, both physically and mentally. When you practice regularly, you get stronger, more flexible, and better at moving quickly and smoothly. But it’s not just about the body. Martial arts also teach you how to focus, stay patient, and keep going even when things get tough. Many people say they feel more confident and less stressed after training. Plus, being part of a martial arts group helps you learn respect for others and makes it easier to make friends. Overall, martial arts are a great way to become healthier, stronger, and more confident while having fun at the same time. Like for instance, Mr. Kirk said, “I wanted to improve my cardio and improve my actions, and techniques because Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is detail-oriented.”
For beginners starting martial arts, it’s important to choose a style that fits your goals, whether self-defense or fitness . Focus on learning the basics like techniques, as these are the main for progress. Attend classes regularly, ask questions, and listen carefully to your instructor to avoid injuries and improve faster. Always warm up before training, wear comfortable clothing, and stay hydrated. Remember to be patient. Martial arts take time, and with steady effort, you’ll see great progress both physically and mentally.
Cindy Martinez said, “If you just started martial arts, be patient and keep practicing. Focus on learning the basics, listen to your instructor, and don’t rush. Martial arts is more than fighting; it builds confidence, discipline, and respect.”
In conclusion, martial arts isn’t just about learning cool moves or fighting. It’s really about growing as a person. For beginners, it can feel tough at first, but sticking with it leads to real progress and confidence. Along the way, it changes how you think about life’s ups and downs. At the end of the day, doing martial arts is about more than just the physical side; it’s about pushing yourself, staying focused, and finding your own purpose and never giving up, even through the ups and downs.
