As the end of the school year rolls around and the heat comes in, we all start to think about one thing: summer! Summer break is very exciting for students as they can leave the stress and worry of school and enjoy having a long 2-month break before the new school year begins. Many students celebrate their summer breaks by going on a family vacation, going or doing outdoor activities, and/or taking road trips! That’s why it is very important to be prepared for all of the fun!
With summer just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about how to make the most of the warmer months. Whether it’s a road trip, a beach getaway, or simply enjoying the local sights, summer offers endless opportunities for relaxation and adventure. “I hope I can go out of the country and to the beach,” said Chelsea Carbajal, a freshman here at OHS.
“I personally prioritize planning. I like to plan before summer a list of all of the fun things that I would like to do that summer,” said freshman Valeria Nunez. A fun pre-summer activity that you can do is make a summer to-do list or bucket list. These lists are fun because during the summer, your goal is to try to do every single thing on the list that you may or may not have been wanting to do for a while. It is the perfect opportunity to try new things! Some things you can put on your summer bucket list include places, activities, goals, and books! “I like to buy summer clothes for the summer,” said Miley Delcid
Summer often brings a welcome break from the usual routine, offering more time to enjoy the outdoors, take trips, or simply relax at home. People find different ways to spend these warmer months, some dive into new hobbies, others catch up with friends and family, and many take the opportunity to slow down and unwind. However it’s spent, summer tends to create lasting memories. “I usually spend my time during the summer relaxing or sleeping,” said Vanessa Castillo, a freshman here at OHS.
“The way that I think people can adjust their school routines to their summer routines is by maintaining the same routine but maybe with different hours, so like 2-3 hours after the regular time that we would come to school,” said Joselyn Sanchez. Having a routine during the summer is very important so that when it is finally time to get back into your school routine, it won’t be as harsh on you. You can try to first delay the time that you wake up and the time that you go to sleep by just a tiny bit. This can help to relieve the feeling of being overwhelmed and stressed about the time that you wake up.
“I personally like to have some small goals in the summer so that I have something to work for. That’s how I stay productive during summer,” said Valeria. Being productive during summer isn’t only good for you, it is also fun! It is always good to have a good balance between having fun and getting things done throughout the summer.
While summer is a great time to relax, it’s also a chance to explore new interests and keep the mind active. Some people take up reading, join workshops, or dive into creative projects they don’t have time for during the school year. Others might learn a new skill, practice a hobby, or set personal goals to stay motivated and productive throughout the break. “Some things to keep me productive during summer are washing my laundry and going to the gym,” said Castillo.
Summer’s warm weather lets you enjoy the outdoors. Summer is great for having a barbecue with your family and friends, outdoor pool parties, and going to parks. It is a great time to enjoy activities with the one with whom you enjoy spending your time. Melanie Zeladas says,”During the summer I love to go swimming at my local pool, with my friends and sometimes my family!”
“My favorite thing to do is have a carne asada with my family,” says Miley.
When the temperature rises, comfort and style become the top priorities when choosing what to wear. Light fabrics, breathable materials, and easygoing pieces like shorts, tank tops, and sundresses often make their way to the front of the closet. Everyone has their favorite warm-weather staples that help them stay cool while still feeling confident and relaxed in the summer heat. “Jean shorts with a t-shirt or crop top is my daily outfit for the summer,” said Pricila Aroche, a freshman here at OHS.
Besides having fun, summer can be a great time to relax and unwind. Whether that means lounging by the pool or going to the beach. However, it is always important to stay safe in the heat by staying hydrated and protecting yourself from the sun with sunscreen. Summer is a special time of the year that helps us relax, create memories, and enjoy some time with our loved ones. “Because of school, I don’t get to spend time with my family a lot, so summer does allow me to do that because I really do enjoy it,” said Melanie.
Summer can be a great time to gain new experiences outside of school, and many people take the opportunity to work a part-time job or get involved in volunteer projects. Whether it’s earning money, building skills. Or giving back to the community, these activities can make the summer both productive and rewarding. It’s a season not just for relaxation, but also for personal growth and making meaningful contributions. “Yes, I plan on working with my grandma at her restaurant,” said Jimena Chavarria, a freshman here at OHS.
As summer winds down, the focus gradually shifts from carefree days to getting back into a regular routine. This time often includes organizing school supplies, setting new goals, and adjusting to ease into the academic year. While it can be a tough shift, taking small steps to get ready can make the return to school smoother and less stressful. “I will be going to put my life together and really motivate myself to have good grades all year,” said Carbajal.
Summer offers a break from routine and a chance to try new things, whether it’s traveling, relaxing, or learning something new. It’s a time to recharge and enjoy life outside of school. No matter how you spend it, make sure to take advantage of every moment. Before you know it, school will be back, but the memories you create will last forever.
