Joining one or more of the sports at Osbourn is a good way to grow, build character, and meet new people. One such club that showcases unity and empowerment in its members is the OHS girls softball team. So let’s take a look at what the team is all about.
So when and why did people start playing softball? “I started softball in 2025, during my sophomore year. I started playing because my sister was on the team and I knew they needed people and it seemed fun,” said Kayla Payne. “I have been playing softball since 8th grade. I started playing softball because I used to play baseball when I was younger,” said Maya Mira. “I officially started coaching 4 years ago. In elementary school, my Mom signed me up for it,” said Coach Suddith. “I started softball at 7 years old and I really enjoyed it,” said Coach Aldino.
There are many great things about being on a team. “The many different personalities and vibes people bring as it makes it extra fun. It feels really good to work in teams year-round,” said Payne. “My favorite thing about softball is probably how we support each other on and off the field. It feels good to have a team that I know I can count on no matter what,” said Mira. “I really enjoy helping the girls train and prepare. I really enjoy it as I like seeing the team win it feels good,” said Suddith. “Spending time with the girls and teaching them. It is great as I really enjoy the commandries and all the personalities,” said Aldino.
In sports, the team members have different roles to do in a game. “I play right field. It consists of backing up the infield, catching pop fly balls, as well as hitting when we are on offense,” said Payne. “I play 1st, 3rd, and left field. I am a part of the most plays when I’m at 1st, I’m helping my team get outs at 3rd, and I help back up the infield and catch pop flys at left field,” said Mira. “I am the head softball coach for the team and in charge of the activities done,” said Suddith. “I am the assistant coach that helps the main coach make preparations,” said Aldino.
When preparing for competitions, what are the preparations made? “We practice for hours almost every day,” said Payne. “We practice Monday through Friday every week for 2 hours rain or shine,” said Mira. “We usually practice different positions at team meetings,” said Suddith. “We use team bonding and practice the positions necessary,” said Aldino.
Sports teams usually have requirements for athletes. “Be able to work hard, you don’t have to be perfect or the best just willing to try your hardest,” said Payne. “A “C” average in your classes, a good energy, and a willingness to learn,” said Mira. “Willing to learn the material and a ‘can do’ attitude,” said Suddith. “Passing 5 classes, a good attitude, and a good work ethic,” said Aldino.
Now would anyone recommend joining the team? “Yes! It’s just a different POV. It’s very different from other sports. I feel like it builds character,” said Payne. “I would recommend joining the team because it’s really fun and you get to meet new people,” said Mira. “Yes! Absolutely we would always love to welcome new members,” said Suddith. “Yes, as we are a very fun and united team. Also would recommend coming to the games,” said Aldino.

This article really shows how the baseball team is. I love how close the team is and how much determination they have for the sport by practicing 2 hours a day even if it is sunny or rainy.

Wow! Monday through Friday 2 hours? That’s impressive! Some days I can’t even handle being in school for regular hours. Just by reading the quotes, I can tell that this is a very good team with a supportive environment! Good luck to the girls!

I enjoy more of baseball than softball, but softball is also enjoyable.
