Osbourn High School evening school programs offer a different and flexible way to get an education, designed for Eagles who cannot adhere to the usual daytime schedule. Whether it’s because of work, family duties, or personal reasons, evening school gives Eagles a chance to learn in a supportive setting that fits their needs. This approach ensures that every eagle has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances.
One of the main advantages of evening school is its flexible schedule. Classes happen in the late afternoon or evening, so Eagles can go to school after taking care of their daytime responsibilities. This is especially helpful for Eagles with part-time jobs, family care duties, or other commitments that make regular daytime classes hard to attend. This flexibility allows Eagles to balance their education with more important aspects of their lives, promoting a healthier and more manageable routine. The evening schedule can also help students develop time management skills as they learn to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
Additionally, the program offers transportation for Eagles who may have difficulty getting to school, ensuring that everyone has access to education. Evening school programs usually have smaller class sizes, so Eagles get more one-on-one attention from their teachers. This helps each Eagle understand the material better and move forward at their own speed. The close-knit learning community also helps build strong relationships between Eagles and their teachers, creating a supportive and cooperative learning environment.
I talked to Mrs. Morales from the counseling department about the evening school program.
Teysi: What is evening school?
Mrs. Morales: Evening school is a program for students who need a different path to be successful at school. For some students, they are a good fit because they prefer a smaller class size or different times for school to support their family.
Teysi: What inspired you to work at an evening school?
Mrs. Morales: I enjoy working with students in a smaller setting, so I wanted to be a part of evening school.
Teysi: How do you address the specific needs of evening school students ?
Mrs. Morales: We work with each student based on the needs that they share when they apply for evening school to help them meet their goals.
Teysi: How do you keep students engaged, especially if they are tired from their day?
Mrs. Morales: Honestly, the classes are fast-paced and keep students working consistently, and students here have a clear goal to finish school.
Teysi: What strategies do you use to support students with different learning styles?
Mrs. Morales: The smaller setting is a great accommodation for any student, but for kids with different learning styles, we have more time to work one-on-one so they have a greater understanding.
Teysi: How do you balance academic rigor with the needs of students who have other responsibilities, such as work or family?
Mrs. Morales: We meet students where they are, but we are able to be flexible in how students demonstrate some of their skills because we have more time to work directly with each student.
Teysi: What are some common challenges faced by evening school students, and how do you help them overcome these challenges?
Mrs. Morales: Transportation is a common challenge for our students, so as with everything else, we are flexible and try to offer some options to help get students to class.
Teysi: How do you encourage active participation and engagement in your classes?
Mrs. Morales: I don’t hold classes, but we try to check in on each student to make sure we aren’t facing any challenges that would prevent students from being successful.
Teysi: How do you help students develop and achieve their academic and personal goals?
Mrs. Morales: We consistently communicate with our students to address all goals regularly.
Teysi: What support services are available for evening school students, and how do you connect students with these resources?
Mrs. Morales: We have provided some ESOL and special education supports to students and have a counselor and social worker available for additional services.
Teysi: What skills do you think you’ve developed by attending evening school?
Denise (Eagle): I developed focus and confidence. I was never focused and confident before, but ever since I started evening school, I began focusing more on my work and became more confident as I understood the learning environment. I started doing better in evening school than I was in morning school and gained more knowledge than I ever did before.
