Wrestling is not an easy sport and if it was many people would be doing it but wrestling takes time and dedication and heart and that’s what these wrestlers do every day after school. Check out this article about Osbourn wrestling and find out how they are doing this 2024-25 season.
Osbourn wrestling has many roots the time and work athletes put into to show their full potential and skills on the mat. Everyday after school at 3:20PM when the bell rings for dismissal majority of the school leaves for the day but not the wrestlers these young athletes go to the team locker room get dressed for practice in the wrestling room and practice for about 2 hours everyday. As that might sound easy to some, just wait till you’re in the wrestling room. “Wrestling is challenging but it’s also a fun sport to do,” said Tristian Cruz. The team starts up practice with either 1 of the 2 number 1 dodgeball warm up games or number 2 go straight into it. The team works on fundamentals, stances, shots, target points all for a good hour but near the end of practice the team tends to go through conditioning which has made a ton of players sweat bad but good for them.
With that the Osbourn’s wrestling team loves to get physical and aggressive when it comes to wrestling. As wrestlers, you are a team but wrestle solo meaning you get your solo stats off only 1 match. Wrestlers love going against different schools to have their meets. “Honestly I like to go against teams as they come and go. I get excited about who my opponent is. I’m not concerned about the school, I’m more concerned about the wrestler,” said Justin Lovo. “I like any school so none of them really bother me,” said Matthew Alvarado. Wrestlers have passion for what they do and they do it with a soul and purpose.
As wrestling is just needing to wrestle and have technique there is some other thing that wrestlers do that most people who go to the gym actually do and that’s called “cutting” or “bulking” Cutting is for wrestlers who need to lose more weight than what they already are to fit in and be good in their weight class. Bulking on the other hand consists of eating more and gaining more weight which a wrestler can turn into muscle to be bigger and go to a bigger weight class. We asked some wrestlers if going up or down in weight makes it harder for a wrestler when cutting or bulking. “It depends on your weight and where you are at: the range gives people advantages and disadvantages. For example, if I’m in the 106-142 lbs range which is lightweight and I’m 142 lbs I’ll only go against people around that weight and not a 106,” said Lovo. “I would say yes, mostly when it gets heavy,” said James Miller. “I tend to have some technical difficulties but I would say yeah depends on weight class the heavier the stronger,” said Alexander Mendez
Being a wrestler is not so easy but each wrestler is valuable in their own way and how they perform on the mat. Wrestling takes time and work and you have to be prepared to go against these big guys. Good luck to the Osbourn wrestling team as they are in mid season go Eagles!
