During the winter break, Students of Osbourn High School celebrate with their families for the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas! They celebrate the holidays by spending time with family, enjoying food, and having a great Christmas. The students have many family traditions that they do. They might celebrate differently, but what matters is having a great time spending the holiday season with your family.
Some students often go to church to celebrate Christmas “One of my favorite traditions I do as a family is to go to the church’s chapel and celebrate Jesus Christ’s birth and Christmas, After that we have a big dinner feast” said freshman Diego Servellon Carranza.
Many other students on break might stay with their families and celebrate together. “We open the presents that we get and we later eat dinner and just have a good time together,” said freshman Amari Shackelford.
A lot of students travel very far from their homes to visit other relatives. senior Teysi Rivas said, “Every year we would go skiing, sometimes, My family and I go to New York City and we would go to Times Square for New Year’s Eve.”
Some used to go to their other families and relatives but time could go fast. “I used to go to my great-grandparents since they were a few minutes away from where I lived but not anymore because they have both passed away,” said senior Cash Short.
Most would go overseas or to the south side of the country. Diego Servellon Carranza said “I would normally go to Spain to see my grandma in Barcelona,” and freshman Giankarlo Cisneros said, “I go to Guatemala every year and see my mom’s side of her family, and sometimes my dad’s of his family too.”
The students love to eat different foods while celebrating Christmas break. They would always eat their favorite meals or they would try something new. Cash Short said, “My favorite food to eat during the holidays is macaroni and cheese because any traditional holiday my family has, we always have mac and cheese involved.” Diego Servellon Carranza said, “We would eat tamales with some really special sauce. I don’t know what it is, but it is imported from Mexico.”
During the time when the students are bored on break, they would play games or do activities with their families. They might learn a new skill from what they are doing. “We play Secret Santa because we get gifts and sometimes it’s very funny,” said Teysi Rivas. The students might play against their own family members when playing other games they bet on. As Giancarlo Rivas Ventura said, “My family and I play bingo and we like to bet money on it.”
If students don’t have any games to play with their families, they can do other fun activities to spend most of their time. Most would have fun inside or outside, or even both. “I like going out and setting off fireworks with my family and my cousins for New Year’s because it’s fun and I like spending time with my family as much time as I can with them,” said Giankarlo Cisneros.
You might learn new skills like cooking or baking with the help of your family. “My family and I love to bake and decorate gingerbread cookies because we spend time together every time and it is more like an activity rather than a chore,” said Cash Short.
All students will have a great time spending the holidays with different games and activities and family time. My own favorite family tradition is to spend time with my family and play in the snow with them. My favorite food I enjoy during the holidays is Pan con Pollo because I’m from a Hispanic family, and the mix of bread and chicken along with some vegetables makes the meal more tasty. We would usually go to our cousins’ house for Christmas in Stafford. My family doesn’t really play games or do any activities other than being together.
