You would be lying if you said you are not scared of anything. From the feeling that somebody is watching you to the fear of tiny holes put closely together, everyone has a fear that falls on the spectrum. These fears are especially recognized during the Halloween season through decorations, festivities, amusement parks, and more. But fears are most capitalized during the Halloween season through Horror movies. Horror Movies are created based on the fears of people and take them to the max to scare watchers. So in the spirit of the Halloween season, what are some common fears among the students here at Osbourn?
Many people may just have a fear of something in general, like insects or the ocean.“My biggest fear is bugs because I don’t like the way the move and that they are fast,” said 10th Grader Stella Bittinger. While others may have a more specific fear like claustrophobia, the fear of tight or enclosed spaces, or aerophobia, the fear of flying. “Snakes scare me the most because you can never anticipate their next move,” said 10th grader Cesia Gonzalez.
Some fears more than others can be shared among many people. “Yes because I think everyone can collectively agree that being in a dark enclosed space is not an enjoyable experience,” said 11th grader Rose McCusker. “I think a lot of people are scared of clowns because of their creepy presence and exaggerated makeup. Also, clowns are usually portrayed as unpredictable which can make people feel uneasy,” said 11th grader Gwendolyn Boles.
While some fears are unavoidable or inevitable, others can be avoided. When they are avoidable most people take the chance to steer clear of them. “I don’t go on tall stuff and even when I went to the Empire State Building I didn’t go anywhere near the railing because I’m so scared of heights,” said 9th grader Jackson Doll. “Yes I avoid my fear by not getting on boats and staying away from the ocean,” said 10th grader Wally Gwyn.
While some fears are horrifying to some, to others their fears could be a fun way to entertain themselves, especially during the Halloween season. “Yes absolutely I think being scared is a fun hobby of mine and I enjoy being scared by haunted houses and scary stories and other things,” said 9th grader Jackson Doll. But of course, others do not like the thrill at all. “No I do not like being scared and I especially don’t like being jump-scared by anything,” said 11th grader Gwendolyn Boles
For most fears, people may have a background story to them. “I got claustrophobia because one fateful day when I was little my younger brother sat on top of a toy box I got into for five minutes,” said 11th grader Rose McCusker. “My fear came from a video of a snake biting a person and ever since then I couldn’t imagine the pain,” said 10th grader Cesia Gonzalez.
Although we do get scared of multiple things from time to time, horror movies are fun and entertaining outcomes of those fears. They give us a sense of those fears being unrealistic or silly. “With all that being said, I actually do enjoy watching horror movies! I really love the classics such as Friday the 13th, The Shining, Halloween, and Scream,” said Gwendolyn Boles. “Yes I like watching scary movies and my favorites are the Terrifier movies and the Saw series of movies,” said 10th Grader Wally Gwyn.
