At the Academy Awards on Sunday, the comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith while presenting the award for documentary feature, which caused Will Smith to slap him

Smith unexpectedly rushed the stage after Rock made a joke comparing Pinkett Smith’s bald hairstyle to the 1997 film “G.I. Jane.” Pinkett Smith could be seen rolling her eyes in response to the joke. (Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with hair loss due to a condition called alopecia, which was diagnosed several years ago).

“Will Smith just smacked the s— out of me,” a confused Rock said after Smith rose from his seat to strike him.

“Keep my wife’s name out your f— mouth!” Smith said, shouting at Rock after returning to the audience.

“Wow, dude,” Rock said. “It was a ‘G.I. Jane’ joke.”

“Keep my wife’s name out your f— mouth,” repeated Smith.

Smith apologized to the Academy during his Best Actor acceptance speech and alluded to the altercation.

On social media, Smith and Rock’s tense moment was met with mixed reactions.

Oscars producer Will Packer went to Twitter after Sunday’s Oscars wrapped up, seemingly alluding to the Smith-Rock fight.

“Welp…I said it wouldn’t be boring,” Packer said.
